From this excerpt, it can be said that following the Lord is the primary building block for the Five Pillars of Islam, or an essential practice within the Islamic faith. According to the textbook “Living Religions” by Mary Pat Fisher, the Five Pillars of Islam are “the basic spiritual practices incumbent on all Muslims”. What is meant by this is that the Five Pillars function as a guideline that all Muslims are expected to follow in order to obtain an afterlife full of rewards in opposition to an afterlife that is full of suffering. Within the Aqa’id al-Nasafi, it also mentions that “the prayers of the living and deceased are like charity that benefits them”. This particular pillar, like the remaining three pillars, is concerned with exactly how an individual should worship Allah. Prayer is considered an act that was legislated by Allah for all of his followers to do in order to remain faithful to Him or to strengthen their faith in Him. Each day, Muslims engage in the ritual of prayer around five times daily (early morning after dawn and before sunrise, early afternoon, late afternoon, immediately after sunset, and night before going to bed), usually done with water while facing Mecca and reciting their personal prayers in addition to passages from the Qur’an while bowing or kneeling in order to fully surrender themselves to Allah and express gratitude. As they do this, they are following Muhammad’s example by remaining faithful to Allah. Each night, Mohammed would pray for long hours, and his feet would eventually begin to swell and blister from standing for so long. Despite this, he continued on in order to remain faithful to Allah. In Islam, similarly to Christianity and Judaism, is intended to rid the body of any sort of impurity. This fourth of five pillars is recommended for Muslims to do, but is mandatory during the period of Ramadan, which is constantly moving due to the lunar calendar of 354 days being used. During Ramadan, it is done to remember the first revelations of the Qur’an to Muhammad. Fasting is believed to bring great spiritual rewards for those that are able to undergo and successfully complete it. This requires Muslims everywhere to give up food, drink, sexual intercourse, and smoking (all things that make the body impure) for very long periods of time. This experience helps all Muslims that are wealthy or well off to feel what it’s like to be like to be without food and water like some people in the world are year round. Muslims are also expected to be even more generous during the fasting period to the poor after experiencing what it’s like to be without food and water for a period of time. Fasting also helps them to liberate their bodies from food, and feel a bit more sensitivity, as it helps an individual to learn not to let anything in that would distract them from worshipping God. Also, many individuals find that after Ramadan, that they are more patient and able to control their desires as well as negative emotions (anger and jealousy) far more easily.
