“Writing, form of human communication by means of a set of visible marks that are related, by convention, to some particular structural level of language” (Encyclopædia Britannica). It all started in 4th grade. The grammar, the writing, and the dreaded 5 paragraph structure. In today’s world, kids learn the 5 paragraph structure and clinging onto it throughout middle school, high school, and even in college. A couple questions asked when talking about structure is why are students taught to write in this form, when and why would you not want to use this form, and why should we not be teaching the 5-paragraph structure to children in today’s society. Society thinks that this rule helps kids prepare their writing skills for the future, but is it really just holding them back? The strengths in my writing are my organizational skills, grammatical construct, and my work ethic. Organizing an essay is a very natural process for me. I always follow the basic guidelines for the structure of an essay, which state that one must have an introduction, thesis statement, body, conclusion, and a works cited when needed. The writing process is always taught as a set way of doing things when, in fact, it is a process that requires personal methods that work for each individual person. It is a necessary lesson to teach in school but there should not be so much emphasis on following the exact way that is taught. It is a contrived process that was probably created by a group of scholars who didn’t even follow these exact rules. If anything, they all did variations of the ideas and then met in the middle with what should be taught. I am in no way saying that the guidelines are wrong but they need to be exactly that, guidelines, instead of a rut that students get stuck in.
After reading this article I saw a different perspective on why children cannot write. In today’s world grammar is being put to the side and not focused on in the classroom. It seemed like it was the children that tried to avoid learning grammar. English class in the past were filled with lessons on grammar. Grammar was enforced in every aspect of schooling.

Until the 1920’s, cursive was the standard style of writing in America’s educational system. It was then that what is now known as print handwriting was first taught in schools, educators theorizing that children learn to read by looking at manuscript in printed books. By World War II, both forms of cursive and print handwriting were required in all American schools. Until recently, children usually learned print in kindergarten and cursive by the second or third-grade. From this time and into high school, students continually received what were once regarded as necessary skills for their future lives. There were also once stricter standards for legible handwriting skills, which is not the case any longer (Time.com, 2009).
