Abortion is a touchy topic. In different cultures and historical times, abortion has been viewed in a variety of perspectives. Some argue it is the right for a woman to have control over her body, while others argue it is murder. From assessing two different films, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days and A Woman Alone, one can say clear differences in the effects of having an abortion or keeping a child. In 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, two Romanian college women struggle with arranging an illegal abortion. The “doctor”, Mr. Bebe, clearly states that everything must be kept secret and that the repercussions of getting caught could be drastic. Like Gabita, Irena once had to make a decision of whether or not she wanted to have a child. For a number of unknown circumstances, Irena chose to give birth to her son. This move, also based in the 1980s, has a similar oppressive society. However, Poland in 1981 had a weakening Communist regime. There were free trade unions, and in the film, there is a popular free trade union group called Solidarity. Unfortunately, in Irena’s case, she is not part of the Communist Party or Solidarity. Consequently, repressed and having to fend for her son, Irena is all alone in the battle of survival. Although Irena’s son is not the cause of her psychological stress, he contributes to his mother’s angst. Responsible for another life, Irena on top of everything else she has to deal with is put over the edge. Worst of all, during this time in Poland, women, expected to be “superheroes”, struggled with the double burden.
