In today’s world millions of individuals donate nonperishable goods to food banks in order to close the chasm between compensation and supplemental nutrition assistance programs. However, with a growing population and millions of hungry people, it is highly difficult to feed everyone. With that being said, a team of engineers in North Carolina has used systems and considerable amounts of data to improve programs that feed the hungry.

Considering that the world population
is predetermined to increase by one billion within a twelve-year time frame, I think improving programs that feed the hungry is a superb idea. The two articles seem to compliment each other because Engineering a Better Food Bank states the steps that were taken, the data that was collected and what better plans were developed from the research results while Can Big Data Help Build a Better Food Bank? briefly mentioned the early steps but mostly focused on how the plans have been implemented. The vice president, Charlie Hale, of the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, speaks highly of the implemented programs, discussed in the first article, stating that, “Over the past seven or eight years, distribution has gone from thirty millions pounds to nearly fifty-four million pounds at the end of the fiscal year 2013. Discuss how you might change coverage (3-4 sentences). Both of the articles were written satisfactorily in my opinion. Each article seemed to properly reach the audience with interesting information and strong keywords that had value and share ability. However, in terms of changing the coverage, I would like to combine the articles together because they both could create a cause-effect piece of writing.

For over 35 years, Feeding America continues to be in the forefront in solving this crisis by providing food to people in need through a nationwide network of food banks. In the late 1960s, Van Hengel established the nation’s first food bank and years later established the first national organization of food banks, Second Harvest. Food insecurity is an issue faced by millions of Americans every day, and the biggest group affected by this is working families with children. Food insecurity is so big that the United States government has now recognized it and provided a definition for it. The United States government has defined food insecurity as “a household level economic and social condition of limited or uncertain access to adequate food” (USDA.gov). Food banks and anti-hunger advocates agree that some of the causes of food insecurity are stagnant wages, increase in housing costs, unemployment, and inflation of the cost of food. These factors have caused food banks to see a change in the groups of people needing assistance. Doug O’Brien, director of public policy and research at Chicago-based Second Harvest says “’we’ve seen a real shift in who we serve. A decade ago, it was almost always homeless, single men and chronic substance abusers. Now we have children and working families at soup kitchens’” (Koch). These families that are feeling the effects of food insecurity will not be only ones affected by it, but all of America. Studies have shown that there is a link between food security, performance in the classroom, and obesity. If this issue is not faced head on, America will have a generation of children not fully prepared for the workforce and high health insurance rates due to obesity health issues.
Poverty is regarded as the major cause of food insecurity. A household food security depends on access to food. America has access to good healthy food. However, a family too poor to buy them do not enjoy food security. Rosenbaum and Neuberger (2005) report that each year the number of people using government food assistance programs grows. “Food stamps are targeted to those with the greatest need for help in purchasing food… [and] helps to lessen the extent and severity of poverty (Rosenbaum and Neuberger 2005)”.

Many people here in America are hardworking and resourceful, but an insecure economy can have a long-lasting effect on a diverse group of people. One of the greatest manifestations of this is the inability to consistently afford a healthy diet. In Good to Great, Jim Collins discusses major key points companies have used to go from a good company to a great one. He did this by discussing seven characteristics companies should listen and absorb to transition from being good to becoming great. These characteristics included: level 5 leadership, first who…then what, confront the brutal facts, the hedgehog concept, a culture of discipline and the flywheel. Companies who can approach these successfully are the ones who enable themselves to separate from other competing companies. Furthermore, the statement Jim Collins said, which caught my attention immediately, was not in these seven characteristics, but in the first chapter of the book. He stated, “Good is the enemy of great.” This sentence consisting of six words I believed was most powerful throughout the book. Having said this, he discusses how typically companies are satisfied with just good, good is good, no one ever tries to take another step to try and become great. While this book is discussing businesses, it also applies to everyday life; am I doing everything to be great, or am I too just satisfied with good? Reflecting back on past work, school and overall experiences, it came to my attention not all the time did I try and be great, for I was content with good, good was good for me. I never took an extra stride to try and become great at what I was doing.
