George Orwell was able demonstrate through 1984 that people are not always what they seem to be. One may behave a certain way only as an act to deception to conceal their true character, and they maintain this false appearance to keep up the façade. Several characters in 1984 use their appearance to hide who they truly are for their own specific reasons. For today, we will be focusing on how Winston Smith and O’Brien possessed a certain appearance, to conceal the reality of their true self.

 He is a large, burly man
 Inner Party Member
 To Winston has the appearance of an enemy of the Party and someone he could trust
