1984 Reading Response After reading the first book of 1984 by George Orwell there are many things I like and understand and a few things that are confusing and things I don’t like as much. The concept of the book is very interesting as it takes place in a futuristic world (not really anymore since it is 2016 now). I really enjoy how the book was written in 1949. and now that that year has passed the reader can compare and contrast what is true about what Orwell thought the future would be like. For example, in 1984, according to the book, everything is monitored by Big Brother. “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption said, while the dark eyes looked deep into Winston's own.” This emphasizes how everyone and everything they do is being watched.
I think that Orwell’s use of strong but subtle ethos and pathos arguments in his depictions of the world that Winston lives in is effective in convincing the reader against totalitarian governmental structures.

This novel depicts a totalitarian world where there are no ways to use freedom, express free though, or express individuality, but there are various sources of brainwashing propaganda. These slogans are used by the ruling groups as propaganda and show one of the similarities in how the governments brainwash, torture, and control the past of their people.

The internal conflict that also takes place in this book was between the two ideas, democracy and totalitarianism. 1984 is a very well written novel by George Orwell. It portrays a society much different than the one we live in today. The reason I titled this paper “mixed emotions” is due to the fact that much like the public this book keeps you thinking. The main character Winston Smith works in the records department of the Ministry of Truth. That sentence alone sums up this book. It paints a picture of what kind of occupancies the people in this society possess. So although this book has been greatly degraded for its sexuality and criticism of communism, 1984 in most people minds one of the greatest books you will ever read.
