In this diploma paper will be discussed and analyzed the principal themes in 1984 by George Orwell. This is a dystopian novel written in 1949 by Eric Blair, famous as George Orwell. The author tries to give a powerful message with his writing, that is the reason why I chose this novel for my diploma thesis. The idea and themes of the novel impressed me the most. The story and themes of the novel are fascinating; they should be known and important for every society. Orwell makes us understand what people are capable to do just because of their desire for power. When the reader starts to read this novel, he/she will hardly stop for a pause because the novel always surprises you with the plot line. Your wish to know what will happen in the end only grows stronger. This novel makes the reader think deeper about life, for the good of society, and makes you appreciate freedom, love and free will. The main character, Winston, makes you see things from a totally different perspective. The purpose of this paper is to analyze and discuss principal themes of the novel. The author wrote this novel just after the World War II, when many countries (like the Soviet Union, German, and Spain) were living in tyranny. The author wants to show to the world that a totalitarian society is a real destruction of a country and he describes it perfectly in his novel. He wants to help people realize the damages that totalitarianism can bring to the state and to stop this occurrence, at least to make aware the citizens of the United Kingdom and to save state from a downfall. He knew that after reading this novel people will find this problem indeed alarming and be aware of what will expect them if they agree for a totalitarian
