Thee story 1984 starts off by introducing a man named Winston Smith who is lower ranked in the society controlled by Big Brother and his party.In the beginning of the novel Winston is feeling the effects of such a cruel political party.The party has outlawed many things for the people who reside in the town of Oceania.Things like free thought,sex and even any expression of individuality.The party is able to observe their citizens through telescreens,fictional devices that act as a television and a security camera.The party even controls the people's history and even put in place a new language for the people that gets rid of the word “rebellion”.Winston is very much against the party and even buys a diary which is prohibited so he can write …show more content…

He tells him about how he hates the party and is really apart of the brotherhood(organization that works to overthrow the party).Winston and Julia are welcomed into the brotherhood by O’Brien.Winston however finds out that O’Brien is a party spy whose goal was to get him to commit a rebellious crime against the party. O’Brien then spends a lot of time torturing Winston who cannot resists no matter how hard he tries.This leads to O’Brien leading Wilson to room 101 which is the place where people go who oppose the party. O’Brien tells Winston that he will face his worst fear.Winston thinks about it and realizes that he had been having reoccurring nightmares about rats.Winston is then locked into a cage and O’Brien lets rats loose and Winston fears they will eat his face off.To avoid this Winston does the unexpected Winston tells O’Brien to do it to Julia instead. This is what O’Brien wanted all along and gives into Winston’s demand. This shows the reader that Winston never really loved Julia he only liked her because it was a way to rebell against the party. This whole experience causes Winston’s spirit to be broken in a sense he learns to love the party and accept them as the authority of the
