ENGLISH DRAFT: REFLECTIVE EXPOSITION “It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity” – Albert Einstein George Orwell wrote 1984 in 1948 as a political mockery of a overbearing state and a criticism of Stalinism. 1984 was Orwell’s stemming futuristic tale of Winston Smith in a world of government domination often defined by hatred, cruelty and anxiety. Orwell commented on his novel 1984, “I do not believe that the kind of society I describe necessarily will arrive, but I believe that something resembling it could arrive.” Almost every public and private place spoken upon in Orwell’s imaginary world is under surveillance through these commonly known things “telescreens”. Telescreen is another word for television. Telescreens can air things such as news, propaganda and any type of announcement. Telescreens are known as the ‘sleepless eyes’ that monitor every move, word, facial expression and voluntary or involuntary reaction of the public in order to distinguish crime. What we do on the Internet and whom we call and text are accessible in today’s world. People’s private everyday lives are being spied upon every second. Cameras record invisibly at any shop, in any place. We, too, are being watched. Just like Orwell said in 1984 “Big Brother is watching you.” The well-known everyday television show Big Brother is sought to be originated back to 1984 through the character ‘Big Brother’ in the novel. Originators of Big Brother (the reality TV show) have conducted this based on the origination of people being spied on under constant surveillance as explored in Orwell’s novel 1984.
