George Orwell's novel '1984' is a story about a man named Winston Smith fighting against the oppression in Oceania. A place where the government keeps close watch and controls everyone with the Big Brother. Breaking the laws and bans on unique personality and individuality, Winston writes all his thoughts in a diary and also begins a relationship with Julia. Big Brother discovers his criminal acts, they then reform him into the conformist they want. In 1984 Orwell introduces, establishes and portrays the world as what it would be like without freedom.
Overall, I enjoyed this text because it was gripping to read and presented interesting concepts / ideas of living. I found it interesting …show more content…

This I my favourite part because they are sticking it to the man "There were no telescreens, of course, but there was always the danger of concealed microphones...." and although they knew the consequences they kept on going. This gives hope to the reader (myself) that Winston and Julia might have a chance and a free life. My least favourite part of text is room 101 and what it does to Winston, completely changing his personality and making him give up and betray what means most to him. By using Winston's worst fear, O'Brien makes Winston betray Julia to save himself from the rats. "Do it to Julia! Do it to Julia! Not me! Julia! I don't care what you do to her. Tear her face off, strip her to the bones. Not me! Julia! Not me!", it shows how far big brother will go to ensure complete control over its citizens. This is my least favourite part because what the book has been building up and all Winstons hopes at that moment are crushed and also destroying the readers hope of Winston and Julia's freedom and …show more content…

Even though 1984 was published in 1949 this idea of totalitarianism and government control is still relevant today because people are starting to notice how the government is monitoring and interfering more and more with our everyday lives. In 1984 the party's slogan which everyone is almost brainwashed to believe is "War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength" which to them is normal making anything they say acceptable, even if it is completely incorrect, just like the idea of 2 + 2 = 5. I think with this idea Orwell really makes you think and glad that life isn’t actually like this. In New Zealand life definitely isn't like what it is in the book, at least for me. For example if i wanted to think my own thoughts or write in a diary and not having someone or thing watch my every move I can, but people like Winston can't which this story makes me more grateful for what I can
