The 1980’s MTV pop was an interesting genre of music. There were many good artists that came out of the eighties. My personal favorites are Michael Jackson, the Beastie Boys, Run DMC, NWA, Guns ‘N Roses, and Aerosmith. With the fashion, talent, and personalities I understand why eighties music became so popular.
It all began on August 1st, 1981, when MTV, which stands for music television, made its debut. “Video Killed The Radio Star” by the Buggles was the first music video to ever play. MTV became very popular because the channel played music videos 24/7. “Now watched by more than 340 million viewers in 139 countries, MTV has been credited with creating icons, influencing fashion, spawning movies and television shows and, saving the

Madonna was a pop icon who many looked up to. She was called a “Material Girl” and her fashion influenced many teenagers. “As an icon of popular culture, she has set fashion trends and boosted the careers of established as well as up-and-coming designers.” (Webber-Hanchett, 1). Crop tops, wearing one earring, raybans sunglasses, leather hats, lace gloves, and big hair were styles she wore. Madonna began to influence fashion when her career first began and throughout her life she was able to be involved more with fashion. Now Madonna has a clothing line sold in Macy’s called Material Girl. Other eighties style included blazers with shoulder pads, scrunchies, big earrings, and a lot of bracelets. Debbie Gibson wore this look a lot. Olivia Newton John’s song “Let’s Get Physical” had a big influence on workout clothes. Because of her music video legwarmers and leggings became popular. Neon colors, vans, reeboks, tracksuits, puffy shirts and fanny packs were other popular trends. Michael Jackson’s look included leather jackets and wearing one glove. Tracksuits were often worn by the Beastie Boys and Run DMC. Gold chains and jewelry were a part of the rap artists’ looks. Since these singers were featured on MTV their appearance mattered a lot more. They were more in the spotlight and people began to look up to them and follow their trends. Without MTV I do not think some of the …show more content…
The first big headline happened on December 8th, 1980. John Lennon, a member of the Beatles, was assassinated in front of his apartment. A fan named Mark David Chapman had planned to kill him. Considering that Chapman was a fan of the Beatles it is surprising to me that he decided to kill him. Supposedly Lennon made a comment about the Beatles being more popular than Jesus and it angered Chapman. Chapman is still in prison and has been denied parole eight times. The next event was on October 1, 1982 when CD’s came about. Billy Joel’s album 52nd Street was the first commercially released CD. The CD was in the works for a while and in 1982 Sony and Phillips teamed up. The music industry was changing to a modern digital era. Another major event was when Michael Jackson’s Thriller album came out. On November 30, 1982 Michael Jackson’s album became extremely popular. “"Thriller" is the best-selling studio album in U.S. history with 29 million sold, according to the RIAA.” (Durchholz, 1). Then on March 15, 1985 Madonna announced her first tour “The Virgin Tour”. The tour became very popular. The Beastie Boys opened for Madonna. Her tour had a total of forty shows and her tour had a gross amount of $5,000,000. Madonna is still popular today and her last tour was in 2012. Overall many significant events involving key people happened in the eighties
A number of other genres, throughout the decade, maintained a significant following. One genre that was slow to start was Hip-Hop, while it emerged in the 1970’s it didn’t become significant until the late 1980’s. Although Classical music began to lose impetus, it gave way to a new generation of composers through invention and theoretical development. The decade was also distinguished for its assistance to electronic music, which rose in reco...
The new sound that internationalized rock and roll crossed an ocean from Britain to the United States and changed the course of musical history. The highlighted moment of history in which the British Invasion was initiated was during the arrival of The Beatles and their appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show for three consecutive Sundays. Neither the arrival nor impact of British rock on the musical development of post-1950s...
The 1980’s is one of the most interesting decades that was experienced in the United States. Dealing with the stock market, the coming up of new inventions, all the way to the types of music people listened to. During the 1980s, the only thing that made Americans be “Americans” was because of the things they were provided with. Many Americans had fun throughout the 1980s with materialistic, glamorous, and technological life styles; therefore there were different economical problems that Americans faced.
It would be hard for one to dispute the fact that MTV has influenced every pop culture trend since its birth in 1981. One could even say that MTV is pop culture. No other media network holds in the palm of its hand the power to control popular cultural evolution the way MTV does. What other media network has influenced and helped shape public opinion, filmmaking, newsgathering techniques, presidential politics, and world politics like MTV has? In addition to that, MTV can take credit for reconstructing the music industry (Rushkoff 126). One would be hard pressed to find a person who does not enjoy some type of music. Thus, "Music" television was built on a foundation that was virtually united by the whole world, and its popularity was inevitable. MTV chose popular music as its beating heart, instead of classical music or jazz. Young people around the country could now see their favorite music icons 24 hours a day, seven days a week. As a result, the young people of America were given a national/international platform to share their common voice, a voice that to this day wants to be heard. Since MTV has such a large hand in shaping the young minds of today, it is important that both parents and children are aware of the impact MTV has in their daily lives.
The 1980s also introduced the production of MTV, displaying new music videos incorporating jazz, ballet, street dance, and social dance in new ways. Many important choreographers came out during this era, such as Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Paula Abdul and Madonna. These artist influenced the integration of choreography and music into video. “Old school dancers like the cabbage patch,
The counterculture of the late 60’s on up to 1980 is prevalent to the history of media. New social forms arose, including the pop music of the British band the Beatles and the simultaneous rise of hippie culture. As the era continued, a vibrant youth subculture which emphasized creativity, experimentation and new manifestations of nonconformist/mellow lifestyles emerged. This emerging era influenced the media industry heavily. This short time frame in history was a definite media revolution. This era commercialized rock music, along with disco funk among other genres, the game show and variety show era, as well as popularizing mass media through magazines.
Even for every day appearances, he always caught everybody’s attention. With his unique fashion sense he manages to start more trends. From the single, white, sequined glove, the red leather jacket with so many zippers. To his pegged pants, fedora, and bedazzled military coats (Rosen, 2009). People everywhere began to follow his fashion trends. Along with other musicians, people changed their look just so that they could stand out and catch people’s attention. Just looking about celebrities today there are numerous of artist that started out with a couple of songs, but didn’t get a big fan base so they changed up their look. From Lady Gaga, to Katy Perry, Nicki Minaji, Lana Del Ray, etc. But unlike them Michael Jackson had already caught everybody’s attention with his vocals and
... Kiss. Kiss called attention and became popular through eccentric effects such as explosives, police lights, rocket-firing guitars, and bizarre make-up. The music scene was making a movement to a more flashy appearance rather than simply the music itself. This fit the culture that was stuck on the appearance of things and didn’t want to become too involved.
When America first met Jackson, he was a charming, likeable young teen that had a solid voice playing with his music family group called the Jackson 5. The flow of his music had: pop, rock, disco and jazz; Jackson tone had all of that. He began his solo career in which he became one of the most dominate figure in the music industry. The released of Thriller was the six album that had the world thrilled since this type of genre was never seen before. Every month 1 million of copies were sold. A mixture of tones, and fashion outfitted his dancing moves. Michael Jackson a singer and songwriter referred by his fans the “King of Pop” or by his initials “MJ” had a much bigger vision not only to rejuvenate music but to change people’s life throughout his talent and dedication he had towards his music. Jackson helped brake barriers being the first African American to ever appear in the MTV. The album Thriller changed the dynamic of the world in how we appreciate music. This mix of tones was much likeable to dance than any artist at the time. Michael Jackson with his album released Thriller in 1983 conquered the pop culture in how we listen music in today society. Michael Jackson made music video a viable art form instead of an advertising stunt, putting in special effects, themes, dance routines, and cameo appearances in to them. Although earlier the videos were viewed in most cases as a way to generate “buzz”, the music videos of Michael Jackson were like a magnate that you couldn’t separate the song from the images of thriller.
In the early 1980’s, as Madonna began her singing and dancing career with her former Michigan boyfriend, Steve Bray, they started writing and performing dance songs together at various nightclubs in New York City. Since then, Madonna has been writing her own lyrics and music, develop appealing dancing movements, and creates flamboyant clothing that grabs everyone’s attention. Many teen fans copied Madonna’s trademark image of “messy and badly dyed hair, neon rubber bracelets, black lace bras, white lace gloves, and chunky belt buckles” in 80’s. Even though Madonna wasn’t famous any longer in 90s, Madonna’s image was still strong in entertainment business. It was her strong personality, determination and hands-on management that led her to gain such fame and
Television and movies were at its golden moments as majority of Tv shows and movies classics came from the 90s like the simpsons which is “The series currently holds the record for the longest-running prime-time sitcom in the US, running for 25 years since 1989, and becoming the longest-running program on FOX”(Wiki). American movie classics were born like Titanic, Forrest gump, Toys story, and The Matrix. Movies and Tv shows were amazing during this time but the “icing to the cake” of Entertainment came from videogames as gaming companies fought to get more support and purchase of their consoles and games as gaming became popular because of these games Super mario, Pokemon, Mortal Kombat, Sonic, Zelda and Tetris. Fashion of the 1990s was wild and colorful with crazy geometric shapes and If your clothes were not baggy then you were considered lame. Plenty of popular clothing brands in the 21st century made their launch to popularity because of the 90s. The group who molded 90s fashion to be greatest where the youth, the youth were the ones who started so many popular fashion trends that would make the 90s have a unique look. You were not a 90s kid if you did not have a pair or a bunch of Levi’s jeans, Levi’s was the go to jean as the popular 517 and 501 were born and everyone was cutting their Levi’s, Rolling up their Levi’s, or even

...ation of mini-skirts did bring a whirlwind in the summer of 1960. Besides, Peter Max T-shirt was also hot in the 60s. In addition, as we discussed of the fashion style for the 80s. The dresses were powerful and simple. Especially, the colors were deeper than the 60s and those designers prefer to add jewels on garments. Moreover, many products were luxurious in the 80s because of the economy has recovered during that period. Modern fashion is meaningful; it brings many changes and has a huge influence on general life. Heskett (2002) mentioned that It not only changes the lifestyle, but also changes the minds of a generation. Modern fashion is continuing to better its functions and forms, moreover it has long way to go and a huge space to discover and create. Therefore, modern designers need more and more artists to inherit and find new styles of vintage influences.
As decades go on, pop culture gets different meanings to each of them. It could mean baggy jeans, tie-dye shirts, throwing up the peace sign, punk or pop music, hard-core rap, The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Keeping Up With Kardashians and much more. These are just examples of what a pop culture is, it is basically a trend amongst people in a particular period of time regarding different popular culture topics that change between times over years. So many trends which have been considered as pop culture have come and gone over the years, we have had Marilyn Monroe days, then Audrey Hepburn and now we are in the Kim Kardashian era. Same way we passed from James Dean to David Bowie and now Bradley Cooper. Some of these pop cultures that forever stay in style, just like a George Clooney and a Chanel suit, and some, we simply do not even want to remember anymore.
