In the article "Ten Ways We Get the Odds Wrong", author Maia Szalavitz emphasizes "why worrying about risk is itself risky" (255). While behaving riskily can lead to bad outcomes, having anxiety, being worried, or being afraid of the outcome of some risks can be dangerous to your body both physically and mentally. According to Szalavitz, fear can be one of the scariest things out there. Even President Franklin D. Roosevelt said that the "only thing to fear is fear itself" (FDR's first inaugural address). Both of these sources let the reader know that fear can affect their body's physical and mental well-being. I can attest to this being true through multiple personal experiences.
Fear is a powerful emotion. Wikipedia.com describes fear as “an emotion induced by threat perceived by living entities, which causes a change in brain and organ function and ultimately change behavior, such as running away, hiding or freezing from traumatic events.”Most people tend to avoid fearful situations, not realizing that something positive may come out of the event or experience. Victor Villaseñor focuses on the topic of fear in his novel titled Burro Genius. Villaseñor demonstrates to readers how growing up he was extremely fearful of any situation. Today, in 21st century United States, people are concerned with the fast pace of new and growing technology, and how these advances should be used. In the last decade alone we have seen major advancements in technology; in science, cloning has become a reality, newer, more powerful drugs have been invented and, in communications, the Internet has dominated society. There is a cultural lag due to the fast rate of increasing technology, and while the governments of the world are trying to keep up their role as censors and lawmakers, we as individuals are trying to comprehend the effects it has on our lives. Will these advances enhance our lives to an unprecedented level of comfort, or lead to the loss of actual happiness? In the early 1930's, when Aldous Huxley wrote Brave New World, this was a question he felt was worth asking.

I agree with this as I have personal experience with this situation. When things in life get hard and stressed out I try to get out of it by entertaining myself by watching a funny program on television, so that I will forget the problem. Fear influences people to make irrational decisions and take extreme measures. Often times, these actions are done to protect one’s reputation. Fear causes people to lie and manipulate to those they care about in order to escape what they are scared of most. Fear of failure has caused higher levels of anxiety, and has made society put blame on each other, rather than owning up to their mistakes. Some believe technology makes people happier because, people always want to upgrade their electronics to new, more efficient pieces of equipment. Everyday choices and habits affect the wellbeing of humans. Recent research documents the unique habits of the people who are happiest in life. According to the data of scientist and professor of psychology at George Mason University, Todd Kashdan, “activities that lead us to feel uncertainty, discomfort, and even a dash of guilt are associated with some of the most memorable and enjoyable experiences of people’s lives” (Kashdan). Therefore, happy people “engage in a wide range of counterintuitive habits that seem, well, downright unhappy” (Kashdan). Essentially happy people take more risks. They have the knowledge that by taking these risks, they can learn how to manage uncomfortable feelings in life. Many people are averse to risk and things that make them uncertain. However, by taking risks and trying new things one experiences personal growth and feel positive emotions which can lead to a more positive mindset. Examples of these actions improving overall/genuine happiness can be anything from trying an odd, new food to leaving the country for volunteer work. While someone might feel nervous at first, many of these risks will end up working out well in the end. You never know what may come out of a new experience and this is a primary reason why taking risks can lead to positive emotions.
