Deception is the action of convincing someone to believe something that is not true, typically in order to gain some personal advantage. Ten Things I hate about You is a modern interpretation of Shakespeare's Taming of the shrew. In life humans use lies and deception to get what they want by using any means necessary. In both Taming of the Shrew and 10 things I Hate about You characters use lies and deception to get what they want from other people. Lucentio and Cameron use lies and fake personas to get Bianca to like them while tutoring Bianca in a foreign language they don’t know. In Taming of The Shrew Petruchio yells at a tailor “ 'tis lewd and filthy: Why, 'tis a cockle or a walnut-shell”. Petruchio in this example says how Katherine's dress is hideous and that no lady should ever where even though she likes it. Throughout the Play he does multipole things like this until in the end she ends up conforming to how a woman should be because he breaks down her spirits. In ten things Patrick is asked to take Kat out for money to which he states “50 bucks and we’ve got a deal, Fabio.” Patrick agrees to receive payment for taking out Kat so other men might have a chance with her sister. He then proceeds to make her think he’s in love with her so she will go out with him. Though the men lie in different ways their outcomes are still the same in the end; Petruchio lies to Kathrine about how things aren’t nice enough for her so she ends up conforming to how women should be, where Patrick convinces Kat that he likes her so other people can go out with her sister Bianca. In both cases Katherine/Kat change from a “shrew” to how a girl should act in their respective times. Sadly there are other men who lie and deceive people to get what they want in both the movie and
