1. Why do you want to be a McNair Scholar? Studying with the McNair Scholars Program will enable me to obtain more hand-on experiences prior to attending graduate school. Most importantly, I believe that working with peers who are highly motivated will help me in becoming more motivated and inspired to do the work I am interested in. Being the first person who attends college and living in the United States for only 4 years, I am not able to find people who can provide me advice in my family and community. Therefore, I believe that becoming a McNair Scholar will allow me to become more knowledgeable. 2. Why do you want to complete a PhD? While living in a diverse community, I have had opportunities to meet with people from different backgrounds. Having a chance to communicate with different individuals makes me realize that tremendous inequalities exist in our society, especially socioeconomic inequality, which make individuals perceive the world differently. This experience has inspired a desire to come to a more in-depth understanding of the interrelationship between socioeconomic inequality and one’s psychological process. In my work, I hope to find solutions to help people in understanding the intersection between these two concepts. How does a PhD help you with your career goals? Making more people be knowledgeable of the issues that I mentioned earlier and getting more people involved would be really significant since it would be nearly impossible for me as an individual to tackle this issues alone, and I always believe that knowledge could be spread toward our society because a little step could lead to a big world that lies ahead. I’d like to become an instructor in a post secondary institution because I want to teach people who are also interested in this topic. Economic inequality and injustice come in the same hand. Poor people are more likely to experience inequality and injustice. The negative assumptions of poor people are created by the media and politicians. Promoting economic justice by offering people living in poverty some form of social support. Ubiquitous throughout history and across cultures is the concept of rich versus poor. Almost all people fall on a spectrum moving from poverty to affluence. The Irish American Scholar Program will significantly enhance my educational goals for school as well as my life experiences. The unique opportunity this program offers coincides with a family value of expanding one’s knowledge beyond the small bubble of the everyday and exploring the world. The value of embracing new opportunities started with my grandfather when he broke away from the norm of his family and expanded his boundaries. His family, traditionally, lived and moved together, but when his family moved to Michigan, my grandfather decided to remain in Arkansas and join the Air Force, allowing him to travel not only in the United States but abroad to England. Similarly, my father decided to go to college several hours away from his family at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. This decision led him to a career with the government where he was able to experience several different cultures in the workplace and abroad. Being surrounded by inspirational family members has inspired me to pursue my own unique experience.
There are two types of people in society, those whom question the realities endured daily and those whom go about life accepting their place in the world, not questioning it. When learning about social justice, one realized that society is not perfectly functioning like one might assume. One professor Bobbie, Harro broke down socialization into different stages of life and organized it into a cycle which exposes oppression, power, prejudice and privilege, all of which are still prominent in today whether people choose to accept it or not. Through his many stages, he discusses how oppression, power, and privilege are recreated through socialization.
Having a family of low socioeconomic status inevitably leaves me to reside in a low-income neighborhood which makes it more likely for me to witness the tragedies, adversities and hardships that people go through [not excluding myself]. Being conscious of this kind of environment, and these kinds of events, creates a pressure on me for having the aim to achieve social mobility in order to escape the aforementioned environment so that my own children could witness one less abominable aspect of life. Moreover, my family’s low socioeconomic status does not authorize me the privilege of being raised with the concerted cultivation method that kids of high socioeconomic status are more prone to being raised in. My family did not have the financial resources that granted us access to extra classes or lessons of instrumental classes, swimming practices, karate practices, or any other extracurricular activities that people of high socioeconomic status would be able to afford. This invisible fence that prevents me from these extracurricular activities enables me to having more appreciation towards the hobbies and talents that other people have. Plus, the fact that my family’s low socioeconomic status acts as a barrier from enjoying expensive luxuries in life creates a yearning [in me] to enjoy them later on in my life, in addition to acting as the fuel to my wish of achieving social mobility in anticipation of providing my own children with the luxurious vacations, gadgets, beachhouse, new cars that I could not

In our culture, money, status, and social power all play a part in how individuals think that others perceive them. There is growing evidence that shows the link between socioeconomic status and unhealthy psychological outcomes in mental health. When looking at higher levels of socioeconomic status for youth it shows a more positive and healthy psychological outcome for youth and their mental health. Behavioral outcomes of those who come from a lower socioeconomic status are greatly affected by that of varying degrees of health shocks such as mental health, crime, addiction, and trauma. My grandparents started off their lives as immigrants that worked hard labour jobs for most of their lives. My father grew up in a poor urban community and the family struggled to pay bills. However, as he got a culinary degree, doors to better-paying jobs opened up for him. After obtaining my undergraduate degree, I want to go on and do a master’s degree, followed by a phD, and become a Neurobiologist. Available opportunities for me would be greater and the financial status of my family would increase. The functionalist theory of Stratification states the importance of occupational differences. The job of a doctor promises more commitment to society than the job of a janitor. More hard-work and expensive education is required to be qualified for the job a doctor. Society is constantly changing as well as the individual perspectives in a changeable society. One of the challenges of being a member of a changeable society is the continued discovery of social changes. Yet from time to time, I step back and try to figure out the factors that affect these social changes. However, the issue of socioeconomic class, for example, less opportunity for people to attend college because of poverty, has been around for centuries. I am a victim like everyone else of the social changes contributing to the issue of socioeconomic class in the United States so much that these social changes shape peoples perspectives.
To quote a phrase from Gottfried Wilhelm Leibnitz, "Make me the master of education, and I will undertake to change the world." If we are to change the world simply because we have and continue to acquire the education necessary to increase knowledge; we must never forget education along without the practice of inducing what is learned is not enough to produce attainable results favorable to sustain a society in the 21st century. We must become the voice of the people by getting involved to make a difference in the world by putting into motion what we have learned.
