1. Write a paragraph about the classes and assignments that best developed your communication skills. Be specific in describing how they were helpful. Basic Counseling Methods (taught by Regina Green and Aaron Welch) was one of my most memorable classes for helping me to develop communication skills. This class detailed the framework for creating open communication which involved open questions, reflection, summary, and the importance of reading body language. This in addition with Advanced Counseling Methods involved role playing with these communication techniques in different scenarios. While these were initially intimidating, practicing what was just learned help to cement these essential concepts into my learning. Oral Communication also helped me to overcome my fear of public speaking. Dr. Williams also made the experience lighthearted and helped me to not take myself so seriously. He also emphasized the importance of memorizing an outline rather than a manuscript. Professor Walton was also fond of breaking up his classes into small groups for discussion. While this was already a strong area for me in communication, it helped me to grow into the role of a leader in this position more by asking questions of others rather than knowing all the answers and telling others what to think. 2. Write a paragraph about communication opportunities you experienced outside of the classroom. What were the strengths and weaknesses that you demonstrated in those contexts? The majority of my extra-curricular communication during my time at Central consisted of either one-on-one counseling and relationship building or small and large group discussion. From the time God called Abraham in Gen. 12:1-4, it took twenty-five years for Abraham to see the fulfillment of just the beginning of being made a “great nation.” There are both successes and failures that are demonstrated through Abraham's waiting. One such success can simply be seen in Abraham's faithfulness to respond in obedience to circumcision, covenant sign (Gen. 17). However, his biggest failure was succumbing to the pressures cultural practice in bearing a child through Sarah's handmaiden Hagar (Gen. 16:1-4). These opposing responses teach me the necessity of being obedient to perform the hard tasks of cutting off those things that keep me from making God my only priority. Also, the danger in conforming to culture in order to try to fulfill in my own way what God has designed that only He can accomplish.

Levi is my nephew born of my biological brother Zalema and his wife Annette Kuedituka. Elliette is Levi’s order sister, who was born two and an half years before Levi. They both grew up in the same household where they were exposed to both English and Lingala. Lingala is a native language of Congo spoken in Kinshasa and the neighboring regions around it. The interesting thing is that Levi mastered that language not only better than her sister and most Congolese kids who were born or grew up in the United States, but he did it before he reached age two utilizing phases and syntaxes used by adult Congolese. How did this happen? With this post try to answer that question considering the communication milestones of toddlers from age 19 months to 24 months old.
The irony is that speaking to others is one of the most important, if not the most important, professional and personal skill students must have to be successful (Doyle 88). The student needs to understand the importance of this skill and realize that in the future many opportunities and career successes are directly impacted by working with others. Students are also encouraged to take charge of their learning. Giving the student control and as many choices is a good way to optimized their learning.
To be an effective leader, one of the skills one needs to have is a strong communication skill. Communication is something we use on a regular basis, so it 's important to develop and understand it. If one has a poor communication skill, that person can give the wrong message or be misunderstood.
I strongly believe that the class, HD341 Communication for Empowerment fulfill my goals in taking this class because it is giving me many opportunities to make connection with other classmates. I usually check in by sharing my stories at school, at work, and any issues that I am still concerned. Therefore, verbal communication is an area I frequently use in class to communicate with my peers as well as my professor. I also have active listening my classmate’s stories and have critical thinking to giving feedbacks to them.
All three of the skills I have mentioned are important in their own ways. And after reading this book, I understand that. But I also understand when it's appropriate to use the skills. Certain situations call for different measures. But if you master these key concepts and use them at the correct time, you can become an effective communicator and get exactly what you're looking for.
This reflective essay has critically reviewed my personal and professional skills that are essential for communication and developing positive relationships with others. There are many different ways in which I could improve my communication style. Although I could list a few, the main one that I believe would improve my overall communication with others, is both confidence, and clarity. In all aspects of my life, I find myself being shyer than others. When reading the opening lecture I cringed at the thought of dealing with communication. Sort of that belly ache feeling you get when you had to do an oral presentation in front of the class in elementary school. For instance, my previous classes before college, although requiring a reference page, did not require me to include proper citations in my writings. After evaluating the quality of my writing toward the end of the semester, I recognized vast improvements in several areas of my writing. By concentrating on the beginning stages of my writings, I could distinguish ahead of time my audience and my message. As a result, my essays are clear, and I remain on topic.
