Date Rape: How Will Be Next?

“The sexes are at war” according to Camille Paglia, author of “Rape: A Bigger Danger Then Feminists Know” (2). The number of date rape cases is on the rise, especially among college students. Paglia claims that the cause for this is women not being careful around men. However, feminist like Susan Jacoby, author of “Common Decency”, claims that is more of a social cause. According to research the causes are women not being self aware, the media and the leading cause being alcohol and drug use. A solution to this problem would be to further educate young men and women on exactly what date rape is and how it can be prevented.

Women, specifically college women, are not being self aware of the situations happening around them. Many college women attend parties where there are large groups of men and allow their selves to get drunk. They become incapacitated and are perfect targets to fall victim to a rape because they will likely not remember anything the next day. Furthermore, once a female gets that drunk at a party any man could do anything he wanted to her. However, that’s not to imply that most guys would commit rape but there is always a that possibility of one that would. Also, research shows that “drug related assaults” are over 5 times more common than “forcible assaults” (Lawyer et al. 458). Additionally, many women may be under the impression that rapes only happen if a date rape drug is used and if they watch their drink they have nothing to worry about. While it is true that date rape drugs are commonly used by rapist, most of the time rapes occurs after the victim has been voluntary drinking or doing drugs and became incapacitated (Lawyer et al. 454).
