“Courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, ‘I will try again tomorrow.’” –Mary Anne Rudmacher
This is a great quote and really speaks true. When Mary Anne Rudmacher says “courage does not always roar,” she means that true courage isn’t about who can talk big or who’s got the biggest ego. That’s not bravery, that’s show boating before the fact. Her second sentence goes on to say “courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, ‘I will try again tomorrow,’” meaning that courage is the fact that when someone fails, they don’t go home with their tail between their legs, but hold their head high and try again, despite having failed the first time.
This process of trying, failing, and trying again is one that I am all too familiar with. When I first started wrestling at the high school level, I thought I was invincible. I had wrestled on Modified the year before and finished the year off with a bang, without giving up a single point. I was pretty cocky. I found out that because of my size, I was the only heavyweight our team had to put out there. Almost immediately, I understood the difference between Modified and Varsity. I got tossed around like a rag doll. Every single one of my opponents was lean and muscular and tough as nails. I even ran into one opponent who was balding. I lost again and again, and again, and again. Where I had done so well in eighth grade, I had done poorly as a freshman. Sure, there were some victories and some high points, but there were a lot more lows. But despite this seemingly unending pattern of one loss after another, I not only stayed on for the rest of the year, but I came back to wrestle the following year ...

...ge. After having almost died because of the swarms, Jack comes back that very same day more determined than ever to destroy the things.
If courage is truly what Mary Anne Rudmacher says it is, then I am all too well familiar with such courage. The characters in each of my books exemplify courage as well. Rick Deckard exemplified courage by doing something that completely went against his ideals and that he really didn’t want to do. Jack exemplified courage by trying to take down the rogue swarms even though he nearly died trying to do so on more than one occasion. The best example of all was Helena, ruthlessly going after Demetrius even though he despised her so. Whenever she got shut down, she came back swinging. People don’t necessarily need to be proud to be brave. They just need to find in themselves the strength to get back on their feet and try again later.
Courage is when you know you’re beaten. The character Atticus, for instance, who was a seasoned lawyer acted courageous defending Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson was a black man who was accused of raping a white girl. Atticus was appointed to defend him. Jem was happy because he thought his father had won the case but Reverend Sykes loathed telling Jem “Now don’t you be so confident, Mr. Jem, I ain’t ever seen any jury decide in favor of a colored man over a white man…”(Lee 208). Atticus was sure he wasn’t going to win the case, nevertheless he gave it a try. That didn’t stop Atticus from trying to defend his client Tom Robinson. Another part in the novel when Atticus was courageous was when he shot at the man street dog. Heck Tate the Maycomb Sheriff was not as courageous as Atticus so he handed Atticus the air rifles and with one shot Atticus took down the street dog. Miss Maudie says “I saw that, One Shot Finch” (Lee 97). Atticus was referred to as one-shot finch because of his shooting skills. The other incidence in the novel when Atticus portrays courage was when he was not scared when Bob Ewell threatened him. Bob Ewell was the man who accused Atticus’ defendant Tom Robinson of raping his daughter Mayella. Atticus thought Bob Ewell threatened him as some sort of revenge, but unfortunately Atticus was wrong because when Bob Ewell said ...
According to dictionary.com “Courage means the equality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, and pain without fear.” Mr.Frank showed courage because in the play when there was a thief in the Annex Mr.Frank was the only one who volunteered to go downstairs to see if it was a thief and that was very courageous of him. Another person who also showed courage was Miep because while the residents
The element bravery is reflected in the literature and movies of today. This is evident in the book Summer Sisters and the movie Twilight. Bravery can be defined as the condition or quality of being brave; courage (Random House).
One of the best explanations of courage is the following by Maya Angelou: “One isn’t necessarily born with courage, but one is born with potential. Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtues with consistency. We can’t be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest.” Her explanation summarizes all that courage can lead you to who you are in life. Courage is standing up for what you believe in, despite disapproval, pain, fear, uncertainty, or intimidation. Courage is challenging what is normal. Courage is giving voice to those who cannot speak for themselves. Courage is using whatever power available to educate the world about injustice. Courage is following your heart even when the path is not known. Courage is trying after failing.
Displaying acts of courage has the aptitude to make immense alteration to one’s personal integrity. Courage is seen as a virtue, and is a constantly repeated choice. The presence of courage is paramount to the actions of the characters throughout Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. “I wish none of this had happened.” (Frodo, LOTR:FOTR, Jackson), “So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.” (Gandalf, LOTR:FOTR, Jackson). This moment which occurs early in the first film, elucidates the way courage is implemented throughout the films, where it must be found within the individual to consummate both colossal and trivial feats. The significance
“It’s such a complicated subject, it’s hard to know what to say. It’s easy to break down courage into categories.
This type of courage is shown by Bilbo as he accepts and departs on his adventure. The hobbits of Bilbo’s town frowned upon adventures and considered them to be dangerous and wasteful, yet Bilbo went on one because he thought it was right, thereby showing Bilbo’s courageous nature as he defied the status quo and society’s slander, thus making him an admirable character to many of today’s people as they do not have the courage to defy their status
“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what” (Lee 128). Courage is accepting a challenge even when all odds are against you. In Harper Lees To Kill A Mockingbird, many people, including Mrs.Dubose, Atticus Finch, and Miss Caroline Fisher put on an amour of courage before going into battle for something they know they wont succeed in. From drugs to court cases, courage needs to be put on like a suit of armor.
Courage is the ability to do something that frightens one. Courage is strength in the face of pain or grief. Throughout the course of World War 2, there were many people who acted in a courageous manner, as portrayed by Markus Zusak in his novel 'The Book Thief'. Weather it was putting their entire life on the line just to save some strangers from possible torture, hiding illegal people in their own houses with the possibility of being killed or smuggling thousands of people out of the Ghettos and into hiding places at the risk of death, there were some extraordinarily courageous humans in World War 2 who not only saved other people lives, but they did it all at
But this isn’t the definition of courage. Courage is being able to act in the face of danger or in an uncomfortable state. Being stubborn and brash is the exact opposite, as someone acting as such may danger others and/or may be comfortable by standing alone. A prime example is shown in 12 Angry Men, as Juror 8 and Juror 3 represent courage and arrogance. At one time in the film, they both stand alone against a room full of people thinking against them, but how they act to it makes them who they are. Unlike how Juror 8 sways others individually, Juror 3 refused to act politely and focuses on himself, making others not appreciate him and seeing him as a barrier to
“It requires bravery to do something no one else around you is doing,” once said Amber Heard. A vast majority of people think of a national war hero when it comes to the word bravery. Although, there are acts of courage all around us that we don’t often notice in our everyday lives.
The current dictionary definitions of courage are inadequate because they only include references to physical courage and omit instances of inner strength. Three contemporary dictionaries agree closely on the definition although they differ in the order of importance. Webster's New World Dictionary describes courage as "an attitude of facing and dealing with anything recognized as dangerous, difficult or painful, instead of withdrawing from it," and The American Heritage Dictionary gives a similar explanation. While The Shorter Oxford Dictionary concurs with this meaning, it states that the primary definition is "spirit, mind, or disposition."
Mark Twain once said, “It is curious that physical courage should be so common in the world and moral courage is so rare.” Mark Twain calls attention to the differing types of courage. It is very true that classic heroic courage is significantly easier to see to the common man. For instance, if a dog is stuck in a burning building the obvious, and ethically right thing to do is to get the dog out. In that situation it is easy to see the heroic action that is happening, however, situations of silent moral courage often go unnoticed. This type of fortitude usually illustrates cases in which there will be an action that is not clear to a normal person. Courage is often portrayed in literature, in example, Mrs. Dubose from Harper Lee’s To Kill
The problem with the definitions of courage that we covered through the course of this semester is that they are very narrow yet the basic definitions are too broad. As a result of this, each needs to limit the scope of the definition at length. Do we really separate definition of courage for each specific circumstance? Just to name a few, we have battlefield valor, political courage, courage to partake in burdened virtues, religious courage (martyrdom), and fortitude. If a supposed self-evident truth does not hold true in all situations and cannot be aptly summarized in brevity, it is often because of a flaw.
Chivalry, honor, bravery, and loyalty are virtues that play a major role in people’s lives. They played an even larger role in the lives of people back in medieval times. Bravery has been expressed not only in medieval times, but it has been expressed in today’s movies and literature as well. It belongs only to the truest of heart, and comes only from their self-confidence. Many battles were fought where brave heroes boldly went into the field of battle and returned victors. They fought against numbers larger than theirs, and did not even slow their hand.
