"This country will not be a good place for any of us to live in unless we make it a good place for all of us to live in." - Theodore Roosevelt As Secretary of the Debate Club of my high school, I was assigned the job of picking a community service project for the Club to participate in. Our school was having a “service day” and different classes and clubs were picking various projects around the community to do on this day. Some groups were going to play with kids at Safe Place, while others were serving food at the Soup Kitchen, and still others were volunteering to pick up trash around neighborhoods. I saw all of these projects as needs that our community had, but I had the desire to help an individual, or even a family; someone who needed something done, but could not do it themselves. I wanted to make a more personal impact; I wanted someone to feel like we had dedicated our day just to them. That was why I ultimately decided to get involved in a Christmas in Action project. I contacted the organization and we were assigned a house to repaint. I honestly did not think that ...
I am dedicated to helping out our community and school, because it warms my heart and soul. Seneca said in about 40 to 60 A.D. that you should “be silent as to services you have rendered, but speak of favors you have received.” In other words you should not boast about the numerous projects you have accomplished and how much physical work you executed, but rather pride yourself on how you helped people in community and school, and how you have affected their lives with positive means. I feel life is joyous and it should be the feeling everyone illustrates, and this is exactly what keeps me functioning in the stressful world today. I find comfort in helping others to make their lives a little more like heaven and this comfort motivates me to perform copious service projects to the best of my capability whenever I find the time. Time is fair to the rich, the poor, and to every race, because time is equal and gives everyone 24 hours daily to accomplish their required tasks. Because time is so valuable and I am occupied by difficult advanced placement and honor classes and juggle school, clubs, sports, and friends, I joined Key Club, a high school division of the adult service club, Kiwanis. Key Club opened new doors to make every extra minute count towards helping others.
Over the years I have been very involved in my community and school. Being a part of something helps to define who you are as a person and the principles and values you hold as important. A personal experience that helps to show my talents and skills can be illustrated by my trip to Italy last April with the MHS Language Department.
Since I was in the first grade, I have been a part of the Girl Scouts, which has caused me to make a positive difference in my community. Participating in Girl Scouts has enabled me to engage in many fundraisers and charity events. While I was a part of scouting every year around Christmas time my troop and I would set up an event feeding the homeless at a local church. Serving and talking to different men and women caused me to reflect on my life and made me realize that I should be more grateful for what I have. My life is not as hard as others, and it is nice to give back to those who deserve
I have always considered myself a very promising student. I have worked extremely hard and received high grades. I have a close knit group of friends and my teachers and I have mutual respect for each other .Although I would consider myself at this present stage ‘fulfilled’ something was missing. I realized it wasn’t a materialistic aspect of my life. Through a tragic incident I finally discovered what fit perfectly in that vacancy. The consecutive hospitalizations of my grandparents evoked great pain and sorrow. However, out of the scorching intensity of this tragedy I was warmed and comforted by realizing what I was devoid of: community service.
Over the course of my life, I have dedicated many hours helping others. At a very young age, I wanted to make a difference in the world, not only in the sciences, but also in the lives of the less fortunate. My grandmother ran a Habitat for Humanity restore in South Carolina, so every time I visited her, I spent long days unloading donations, working the cash register, talking to perspective home owners, and delivering lunch to workers on jobsites. I loved every minute
Never in my wildest dreams would I have even begun to imagine that community service could be such a rewarding experience. As the oldest child I never had the opportunity of having someone that could help me with my homework, play with me and help me when I needed something. My parents once in a while could help me with homework, but once we moved to the United States I was definitely on my own considering my parents didn’t know enough English to help me. From this moment forward, I can say I’m very proud of myself for being where I am now without any help throughout my school years. Yet, I know I could have done better with the help of someone. I figured with the opportunity to do community service, I could take advantage of this situation and choose something that would help kids with whatever they needed and maybe even play with them if I had the chance.
At First Baptist Church of Cabot all of their members get a chance to do at least one service project. Each year I have helped with different block parties in areas where there is not much for the children to have fun and play with others. At the block party I got to spend time with the kids and talk to them about home life, school, and what they do on a regular basis. It is
Why should high school students have to complete community service hours to graduate? When students start their high school career, they are thinking about their diploma and their future. People should not have to rake leaves for elderly people or serve food for their local retirement home to go to college. Getting good grades these days is hard enough, but trying to earn a certain number of community service hours makes high school even more demanding. Helping the community is great; however, during school hours, community service can cause students to miss class work, tests, etc.
Community service allows us to spread positivity and donate our time to the less fortunate. It encourages us to build connections with new people, and enables us to better, not only the world, but also ourselves. Oxford Dictionary defines it as, “Voluntary work intended to help people in a particular area,” and I unequivocally concur with that definition. STRIVE encouraged me to partake in a minimum of eight hours of community service, working at an organisation, assisting the less fortunate; anything suiting these requirements. It was undoubtedly the most enriching component of the program, but it also confronted me with some complications. Moreover, finding a place to begin became exceedingly onerous, due to my young age and inexperience. My options were limited, so I couldn't be over-particular or fussy in my choice. However, this was indubitably not about myself, but more so about the less fortunate that required my help. With this thought process and mindset of high precedence, I was able to find work at the Salvation Army, and complete a total of 10 hours.
During high school and my first couple of months of college, I have volunteered quite a bit. I have fed the homeless, helped out at Habitat for Humanity, and cleaned the streets of Memphis, Tennessee. Doing community service and volunteering has helped me related to people and their struggles much more. It has made me realize how blessed and fortunate I actually am compared to other people. Helping and providing for people who do not have enough clothes to wear or feeding those who do not know when they are getting their next meal humbles me, because I could have been in their position easily. That is why helping the homeless and helping the less fortunate is so important to me. Helping someone who cannot help themselves is very rewarding,
In order to fulfill the 12 hours of community service requirement for Nutrition course 139 I applied with five organizations on the approved list. The organization that replied me the fastest was Open Heart Kitchen, they mostly operate in Pleasanton and Livermore areas. Their application and signing up for shift process gives a feeling that this organization is massive, and many individuals really care about the less fortunate. From observation and conversations with the site supervisor, I believe this organization relies on individual donations, small business donations and large corporate donations such as Safeway and Walmart. This organization also relies on volunteers to work every day, they get workers from students fulfilling their hours and resume, individuals fulfilling court orders, and those that just want to help the less fortunate.
In chapter 3 of our Serving Through Learning book, serving the community is discussed in great detail. It gives several tips on how to effectively help the community. The tip that stood out to me the most was that we need to understand ourselves first. This includes who we are as a person, but most importantly what strengths we have to use for the project. I believe that my strengths will be very beneficial in planning and conducting our service project event. Some of my strengths that I have used recently are strategic and positivity. Since midterm is approaching there have been several assignments due and many hours of studying needed. In order to accomplish all of this I have been using several strategies so that I do not get overwhelmed. One of my strategies that I use is writing a list of what I need to get done for the day in order of what is most important to what is least important. This helps me to
I never thought that I would have fun teaching and serving others. But that could also be to me having close friends around me. It was a great experience, now I just hope young kids would change their attitude to their elderly, because I wanted to smack them so hard but I didn't. I refrained myself. But I served them food, taught them how to defend themselves, and had a fun time while I was there. Not only is it good exercise, because it felt like was running track before the season even started, but it will help me with my college application.
Though, the concept of community service is not very new its importance has developed in the past few years. There are thousands of organizations all over the world that engage and hold millions of young people all through the world. People of all age groups, with a maximum number of youth are involved in the process of community service. Community-based organizations include; social service organizations, non-profit providers and associations that engage both young people as well adults as volunteers. The process is beneficial both for the individuals as well as the society. Without community service people would not know the meaning of charity and giving back. Community service can be defined as a service that is performed for the benefit of the public. Community service is not a responsibly or an obligation; it is a commitment. A person must want to do it with good intentions and not because they are being forced to do so. Basically, community service is a way for a person to give back to a community in which they live.
I also had the privilege of helping with the Meals on Wheels non profit organization. My grandfather used to be a Meals on Wheels recipient and he would share with me how he enjoyed looking forward to their company and a hot meal daily. I volunteered because I wanted to give back and help someone else’s loved one in the same way. It was very rewarding delivering hot meals to people who didn’t have the means of getting one as well as being there for them to talk to. Overall, it was a very humbling experience, it made me realize just how blessed I am and how much I take for granted daily.
