Much of today’s society seems obsessed on what actors/actress, athletes, and music artist are wearing, eating, who they are marrying, dating, where they are vacationing, what affairs they are having or have had, and how they live their everyday lives. What’s so interesting about this obsession is as a society we are implacable and often place celebrities on a pedestal, only to destroy them when they are illusive or promiscuous. Media outlets are swift to report when celebrities are in trouble but quickly forget all their accomplishments. It’s as if we want them to be perfect but once they are associated with a scandal we embark on destroying their reputation and character. Should society hold celebrities to higher standards just because they are paid millions for endorsements and a craft they worked hard to perfect? Do we as a society have the right to castigate celebrities when they misbehave? Do celebrities have the right to become livid when they are focused on for their immoral behavior? Do they love the media attention only when it benefits them? Before we can answer the above questions, would we, furthermore, can we live our life as a celebrity if given the opportunity?
The perks of illimitable wealth, vacationing all over the world, housekeepers, chefs, being in receipt of freebies from designers, multiple homes in diverse parts of the world, chauffeurs, the finest foods, and all the other perks that come with being a celebrity? Do they all sound attractive? Sure they do, to those of us who want to live the fabulous life. The question is do we want the downfalls that come with fame? I never thought I would see the disrespect and distain for a President who has the best interest for Americans and who for now is leading a fairly honest administration. Don’t we all need healthcare? Don’t we all want our jobs to stay in the United States? Don’t we all want to be safe in our homes, airports, and workplaces?

His foolishness did not stop there, while leaving the correctional center in front of an crowd he waved goodbye from the top of a SUV. If this was to be the case of any other person without fame there would be no bail as quickly as Justin Bieber was released. By that happening it shows us that they didn’t pay much attention to what he could have done driving that fast. It is not fair that the correctional center released him that quick due to the fact that if a normal person would have done that it would not be that easy for him to be released that quick. The job of the President of the United States of America is one the most stressful in the world. This is evidenced by the rapid aging of the men who enter the office. Along with living up to the reputation of the president and having to follow up some of the greatest leaders of all time, the president is faced with media that hounds his every move and a nation with the right to express their displeasure anytime they so choose. Our first president, George Washington faced the same issues way back in 1789. Washington serves as a model for future presidents as he was the mold off of which the position was formed. Washington was humble, honest, and brave; all of which, voters look for in today’s presidents.

Why is that all blogs or media sites only pay attention to the bad behavior? We see videos of famous people getting drunk, doing drugs, and even being disrespectful. Eventually, we see this domino effect on young girls, they start being rebellious, start to talk back to their parents even go to parties and drink. Nowadays, celebrities are seen as role models to these kids. What kind of example are these celebrities providing to teenagers when they can barely control their life. Role models are supposed to be someone you admire, someone you look up to and try and follow their examples. Not someone who lives a fake life and you barely know. As stated in an article called “Why this generation is so completely obsessed with the idea of Celebrity” Adam Pliskin explains the real reason to why we follow celebrities as much as we do. This is because we secretly want fame ourselves.
What about celebrities and people who are constantly in the media? They are just like us, they make mistakes. They have run-ins with the law, they need justice too. When a celebrity needs compensation for a wrongful death case, is it handed to them? When a celebrity has a DUI are their punishments as severe as the usual? When a celebrity is charged with possession of drugs, do they get treated like everyone else? When a celebrity is called for jury duty, are they given a fair chance to participate in this civil duty? Does the legal system go about treating celebrities the same way they would a regular person, why and how?
Anywhere you go you see pictures and hear stories about what celebrity did what, and who’s sleeping with who. Its clear to me America is obsessed with celebrities, having to know everything about them and their personal lives. This growing obsession is sick and unhealthy for the average American, it causes our culture to only value the celebrities and look down on the normal everyday person, allowing the average everyday hero to be lost in a sea of celebrity drama. This obsession is causing our kids to grow up and wanna live unrealistic lives, hoping to be just like Miley Ceyris or the next Justin Bibber. Our countries obsession with celebrities has moved from being a healthy hobby; into a stalker obsessive problem.
To be a successful celebrity, staying relevant is vital for job security, this forces stars to up their game every year. Celebrities are always trying to shock their audiences and make big news stories to keep their names in the spotlight. Some have taken it too far, by stripping on stage, using explicit and suggestive language in every song or music video. I think celebrities should continue upping their game but not in an explicit way promoting unrealistic hypersexed images. They should focus on their tours, albums, TV shows, etc. and find another ‘creative’ outlet to express themselves individually. Celebrities should find another way to shock and impress their audiences that is more realistic than showing more and more skin every year.
Does the public have a right to know everything about a public figure’s life? If you turn on your television, the primetime program will have lots of news about celebrities. By the time you have to pay at the register at the supermarket, you can appreciate your favorite public star on the cover of a magazine, or if you open up a new window on the internet browser, a celebrity gadget will appear at the beginning. It is irresistible not to read about the personal lives of the various famous people with pictures, or watch what is happening in the showbiz. In fact, it makes entertainment for a while boring.

This is the main reason celebrities make such terrible role models. The fans will idolize them, but they don’t know what the celebrity is like on a personal level. They don’t know the opinion of the celebrity on certain issues. If they did and they agreed with the celebrity, then there is a whole other reason to look up to this person. If a fan disagreed, then they could still like their work and just agree to disagree, but it will never be like that. It is no one’s fault, but that is the main reason celebrities aren’t good role models. That is why parents, siblings, friends, other family, and even fictional characters work as role models. The people that look up to them know their role model personally and therefore know whether or not they agree with the role model’s
