Everyday life in a hospital is complete and absolute chaos. There are doctors and nurses running everywhere to treat patients, ambulances coming through every so often, children and patients crying, and surgeons telling a family that their loved one did not make it. However, outside of all that craziness is an operating room (OR). A place filled with pressure, intensity, high hopes, and stress. There to help control the environment is a surgical technologist. While preparing patients for surgery, surgical technologists manage the equipment and operating room, follow the instructions of the surgeon, and ensure the safety of the patient. Surgical technologists are members of the surgical team who work in the operating room with surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, and other personnel before, during and after surgery. Techs are basically considered the surgeons “right hand man”. They may prepare a patient for surgery by washing, shaving, and disinfecting where the incision may be. They arrange the equipment, instruments, and supplies in the operating room according to the preference of the surgeons and nurses (Ferguson 537). During the operation, they count all equipment used, and hold retractors and cut sutures as directed. Following the operation, they may clean and restock the OR and sterilize the used equipment (Ferguson 538). Being a surgical technologist requires certain characteristics such as, patience, responsibility, stamina, stable temper, and a desire to help others. Surgical technologists must pay attention to details, have good organizational skills, and be very attentive during long surgeries (Hayes 842). Just around the corner from a waiting room is an OR, a surgical techs “home away from home”, a place where miracles happen. Works Cited Bureau of Labor Statistics. Surgical Technologists. An orthopedic surgeon must be creative. The body is like a sculpture. When someone breaks a bone and the orthopedic surgeon has to go in and fix the bone with pins, the surgeon sometimes has to be creative with the way they put the pin in and where they screw it down. An orthopedic surgeon must like to fix things (Ryan). Orthopedic surgeons are similar to construction workers. Both use drills, saws, hammers, nails or pins, and many other tools. An orthopedic must not be afraid of blood, bones, or loud noises. When asked if ever disgusted at the beginning of medical school, Dr. Ryan was q...

... Orthopedic surgeons are hardworking, intellectual, and caring individuals who continue to improve the lives of many who suffer from various breaks, tears, injuries, and diseases.
Ronnie Oldham once said, “Excellence is the Result of Caring more than others think is Wise, Risking more than others think is Safe, Dreaming more than others think is Practical, and Expecting more than others think is Possible.” Compassion runs through the veins of Cardiovascular Surgeons everywhere. They knowingly go into a field of study where no guarantees are promised and then strive to succeed. Cardiovascular surgeons save the lives of many people by operating on life threatening diseases that occur in the organs within the chest, and the bony structures and tissues that form the thoracic cavity. They must possess many skills, the first and foremost being humanistic skills, other skills include leadership skills, the ability to make arduous decisions with limited information and, more often than not, a miniscule period of time, and lastly, of course, impeccable knowledge of the human heart and body, along with outstanding surgical skills. Many people find that they do not have the expertise nor the mental strength to be a cardiovascular surgeon which is why it is a career best left to the undaunted.
Surgical Technicians are needed tremendously for a surgical procedure to run smoothly. For surgeries, hospitals and offices are staffed with a trained medical team ready to take action when they are needed too. The most important position beside the surgeon is, a Surgical Technician. ‘A Surgical Technician can be related to how they interact with a patient, how they prepare the tools and operating room for surgery, along with their ability to assist and react to the needs of a surgeon.”

The ultimate goal for myself, and the initial reason for studying with the Distance Learning Centre, is to become an Operating Department Practitioner(ODP). The role will involve working within operating theatres inside hospitals to support patients throughout their time during certain operations, or ‘periopertive journey’ (Health Education England, 2014b). I came to the decision to focus on making this my chosen career in November 2012 through word of mouth and a significant amount of research. The profession carries an extensive list of positives and negatives, along with how well it fits my personality and previous experiences; despite never working within the health sector previously.
Surgery is a team sport, within this team everyone has a role to play and information to receive and give. If this information is taken wrong or misheard bad things could happen. Which is why the breakdown of communication is such a big concern
Time out was done by the anesthesiologist, the circulating nurse, the surgeon, and the scrub tech all pausing before the surgery and verifying the patient’s name and date of birth, the procedure being done, the site and location on the body in which the procedure was being done, and documented the count of all the equipment the scrub nurse had before surgery to compare to after surgery. 5. The patient’s privacy was protected and respected throughout the whole surgical procedure. The staff was very professional and I felt I learned a lot from them during my OR experience. 6. A sponge count is when the scrub nurse counts the sponges that are unused before the surgery she relays this to the circulating nurse and it is documented. After the surgery the count is redone to make sure that there are no sponges left in the patient. 7. The circulating nurse documents the information and signs the chart in the operating room. From pre-op to the operating room the nurses in pre-op gave off report to the circulating nurse by SBAR. From the operating room to PACU the anesthesiologist went with the patient and handed off the patient’s condition and information to the nurse in there. 8. There were no ethical or legal issues that were raised during my observation in the whole surgical process. 9. I learned how the whole operating procedure works from start to finish, all the legal paperwork involved, and how the team interacts and helps each other out to give the patient a safe and
Surgical nursing or operating room nursing is very important in health care since, they do not only work with the patients before surgery (preoperatively), besides, they also work with the patients in their recovery period (intraoperatively), as well as the post-operative period (postoperatively). Like all other nurses, surgical nurses need to graduate from a two or four degree program in nursing, and must pass a national licensing exam, qualifying them as a registered nurse. Besides, nurses are train and specialize in different capacity. Furthermore, a nurse can become certified in the medical-surgical care if they so desired. I went to the operating room on March 23, 2016 for the Wilkes Community College Nursing Class of 2017 for observation. Another student and I were assigned to this unit from 7:30am-2:00pm. When we got their we changed into the operating room scrubs, placed a bonnet on our heads and placed booties over our shoes. I got to observe three different surgeries, two laparoscopic shoulder surgeries and one ankle surgery. While cleaning the surgical room for the next surgery, I got to communicate with the nurses and surgical team they explained the flow and equipment that was used in the operating room.
