“Whenever we find one who has come unscathed through every test in childhood, youth, and manhood, we shall set him as a Ruler to watch over the commonwealth; he will be honoured in life, and after death receive the highest tribute of funeral rites and other memorials.” Great philosophers like Plato and Machiavelli raised a lot of arguments in how a true guardian is like. Although there have been some oppositions on how guardians should execute duties, it is noticeable that both philosophers agree that a true guardian is more than just a leader. A true guardian assumes active responsibility to the society of which he or she is part. As discussed in Plato’s The Republic and Machiavelli’s The Prince, guardians are leaders that don’t own any possessions and they are active in ruling the society. True guardians are enlightened from shadows of lies. These rulers desire to offer his people a better world to live in. True Guardians must be very skillful in fighting. Siddhartha Gautama is a great example of a true guardian. 'Siddhattha Gautama' means descendant of Gotama who is efficacious in achieving aims. He later became known as Buddha, which means "one who is intuitive, awakened, or enlightened." But how does one achieve enlightenment and what do you do after gaining it? Siddhartha Gautama was born in Lumbini, near the Nepalese-Indian border. Asita, a famous wise sage, predicted that he would become a great king or a great religious teacher. Siddhartha’s father, King Suddhodana, wished for his son to be a king so he shielded him from religious teachings or any knowledge of human sufferings. In his early life, he was born a Kshatriya. Until the age of twenty nine, Siddhartha lived a luxurious life as a prince. Siddhartha’s father, King Shuddodana consulted Asita, a well-known soothsayer, concerning the future of his son. Asita proclaimed that he would be one of two things: He could become a great king, even an emperor. Or he could become a great sage and savior of humanity. This made King Shuddodana wary of what his son may become, therefore he did anything in his power to surround his son Siddhartha with beauty and health to show Siddhartha that there is nothing to save humanity from since it is perfect. If Siddhartha was my son, I would let him see all the suffering in the world and allow him to take action instead of hiding it. It is selfish for the King to hide humanity’s flaws. One day, Siddhartha had seen two wandering, sick and old men. He also, for the first time, experienced death. Due to the sights he had seen, he escaped the palace and lived in a forest where he followed a spiritual life of meditation. Throughout this journey, Siddhartha interacts and rejects many different societies that he feels do not belong to him. Siddhartha is born into a family where his father is a Brahmin, and he is supposed to follow in his father’s footsteps. In the beginning of the novel, Siddhartha tries to find enlightenment by studying texts and living in severe self-discipline. Unfortunately, this way of life does not help Siddhartha achieve enlightenment. Siddhartha feels that these rituals will not benefit him in his quest to find enlightenment. Therefore, Siddhartha alters his strategy and leaves to try to find his own way to find enlightenment. This common way of learning is the first society Siddhartha rejects. As Siddhartha leaves his home, he believes he will be able to find enlightenment by becoming a Samana who practice severe self-discipline by believing enlightenment can be reached through a rejection of the body and physical desire. Siddhartha decides he should follow the Samanas’ path and see what he can learn from them since he was not able to find the wisdom he is searching for at home. Siddhartha embraces the Samanas’ practices of eliminating all thoughts and desires. After undergoing this way of life for many years, Siddhartha realizes this way of life will not provide him with enlightenment. Siddhartha leaves this type of society to once again search for his own path to enlightenment. Siddhartha meets the Buddha who has achieved enlightenment, and Siddhartha hopes he can learn from the enlightened one. ---- (quote) Siddhartha heads to a nearby city where he meets Kamala, a beautiful woman who he becomes close with. In this city, Siddhartha becomes caught up in the way of life of common people. Siddhartha is becoming a businessman involved in gambling, pleasures, and riches. He wants to be able to reach something that his father and the other elders are yet to achieve and that is enlightenment. He tends to go against what his father believes as well as his religion, he is taught by the samana even though everything in his life has told him that the samana is the wrong religion. It is clear that Siddhartha is ready to go on his journey to find enlightenment when he goes against what his father believes and tells him when he goes to stuff with the samanas. As a young man, Siddhartha was anxious by the lack of understanding and he needed someone to provide him with knowledge. In an attempt to gain knowledge and understanding, he journeyed out to different areas to pursuit new knowledge from outside sources with his friend Govinda. He met with the Samanas, had interactions with Gotama, had detailed lessons with his lover Kamala, and achieved a high level of knowledge and understanding from vasudeva the ferryman and his river. Throughout history there have been countless numbers of teachers: artisans, craftsmen, ideologist, to name a few. They have all master some skill, gained some wisdom, or comprehended an idea. These teachers have achieved knowledge which allows them to excel and to be above and beyond regular people. Knowledge is something everyone strives for, and many desire. To achieve knowledge, one must have an eye-opening experience, and epiphany that leads to the increase of one’s intellect and skill set. In Herman Hesse’s Siddhartha, the main character, Siddhartha, goes in an almost never ending quest to achieve knowledge. Throughout this journey, Siddhartha encounters many teachers, whom which he learns a great deal, but fails to attain that knowledge he achieves for. However, each and every single one of them teaches him something which ultimately contribute to his final achievement of knowledge. As Siddhartha mentioned to his good friend Govinda:

In Siddhartha by Herman Hesse, a young Brahmin in the wealthier part of India, approximately three thousand years ago, decides to set a goal onto his life. He decides to journey along the path of enlightenment and reach Nirvana, a state of total bliss. His dear friend, Govinda, accompanies him on this journey. Siddhartha sets out to seek the path to enlightenment, but it is long and difficult. Along the way, he grows spiritually and intellectually from a young seeking Brahmin, to an old, wise, and content ferryman with the knowledge of enlightenment and possessing many insights on life.
In Hermann Hesse’s novel, Siddhartha, the main character of the story, Siddhartha, a young Brahman along with his beloved friend, Govinda leaves home to find enlightenment. They join a group of ascetic Samanas and for many years Siddhartha and Govinda deny their body’s pains and senses including the external world. Yet, Siddhartha is not satisfied with the result and fails to find the true path to enlightenment that he is seeking. Furthermore, Siddhartha because of dissatisfaction renounces the life of asceticism and departs with Govinda to visit and hear Gautama Buddha speak and learn from him. However, Buddha’s teaching does not provide Siddhartha with what he needs therefore; he leaves Buddha’s presence and continues his journey to discover the true enlightenment while Govinda stays with Buddha. Siddhartha realizes that Buddha’s teaching will not be enough for him since his thirst is not that of knowledge but rather it is a thirst of feeling and experiencing that moment of attaining the enlightenment. Therefore, he decides to continue with his journey. While on his journey, Siddhartha suddenly realizes that one must seek and attaining enlightenment through living, not through preaching since what he is seeking is not something the outer world but rather it is the inner world, the self. During his journey, Siddhartha meets a Kamala, a beautiful courtesan, who introduces him to the life of wealth and pleasure. However, Siddhartha decides to leave Kamala after realizing that he has gone astray from his real path, from the path of self-discovery, unaware that she is not pregnant with his son. Throughout his life, or at least the life described in Asvaghosa’s Buddhacarita, he was constantly struggling with the world in order to obtain enlightenment.
