Have you ever felt guilty for spending too much time on Facebook? Posting too many pictures on Instagram? Perhaps you find that others have an unhealthy addiction to “twit” details of their life on Twitter. There are those who believe that social networking sites are a waste of time. That they are a detriment to “real life” social relationships. But these platforms are more than just entertaining gateways. They have a deeper impact on our society than some are willing to admit. Just like everything in life, they have their pros and cons, but the benefits of social media far outweighs the later. Research show that social media does more good than bad for society, because it spreads information faster than any other media, sparks political change, and helps socially isolated people to connect with others.
The first argument as to why social media is more beneficial to us than detrimental is it spreads information faster than any other media. From natural disasters, a famous figure passing away, or other shocking news; it only take seconds before a friend posts it on their social media page, along with their opinion or reaction. With that in mind, because we live in the information age, the abundance of data we’re exposed to can easily cause weariness (Kelly, 2010). Not every piece of news is of interest to everyone. Based on your life experience, personality, preferences, and multiple other factors, certain news will have more impact and significance to you than others. Filtering certain news report to fit your preference can save time and be more efficient than reading multiple headlines until catching one of interest. It just so happens that social media does that in a fantastic manner. Because social media are composed of friend...

When discussing the media, we must search back to its primal state the News Paper. For it was the News paper and its writers that forged ahead and allowed freedoms for today’s journalism on all fronts, from the Twitter accounts to the daily gazettes all must mark a single event in the evolution of media in respects to politics and all things shaping. Moving on in media history, we began to see a rapid expansion around 1990. With more than 50% of all American homes having cable TV access, newspapers in every city and town with major newspaper centers reaching far more than ever before. Then the introduction of the Internet; nothing would ever be the same.
Citizens around the world are drastically influenced by the media around them. Every day life is constantly changing because of the new trends on what is popular. As Ms. Susie Orbach stated “Social media […]

Social media has grown a lot over the past years in the way it allows us to be able to communicate with others around the world. According to Andrew Keen “On today’s internet everything we do–from our use of ecommerce, location services and email to online search, advertising and entertainment—is increasingly open and transparent.” Due to social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, etc. we are allowed to access different kind of information from friends and families lives and what is going on around them. In the article “Sharing is a Trap” Andrew Keen argues towards the negative side of social media and makes good points to back up his argument. Jeff Jarvis in the article “Get over it” argues more towards the positive outcome that can come from
Over the past couple of decades, we are all aware that social media has had a great impact on us and the way we think. Social media has revolutionized the way people communicate and socialize on a daily basis. It has been spreading propaganda on how we should live our lives, how to act, what’s right and wrong, what’s good for us and many more. It is double edge sword that hinders people’s abilities to think for their self, but has open such a vast world to share one another 's opinions in a matter of seconds on the internet or television.
The development of technology has erupted over the past few years, resulting in an immense number of inventions and breakthroughs. One of considered humanity “greatest invention” is the social media. According to Kaplan (2010), ‘Social media is a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of user generated content’. Social media such as Facebook, twitter and Instagram have influenced and changed our ideologies, and perspectives. Although the public would like to believe that social media has provided them with benefits that make their life easier, it may also negatively impact one’s life. This essay will be discussing the major benefits
“If Facebook was a country, it’d be larger than China in three years.” (McMillan) The amount of people using this single website alone, out of the hundreds of social media on the Internet, has overtaken the entire population of the United States long ago. There are vast amounts of people scattered around the globe taking part in the use of social media. Although a very large part of the population uses it regularly, there are still many negative elements about it. Such include the blossoming of unreliable news, privacy concerns and the decline in happiness within the people. Social media sites cause more harm than good in today’s society due to the instigation of afflictions in health and daily life.
Over the past few decades, both media and the practice of journalism have changed dramatically. Two major factors that have contributed to this evolution have been digital fragmentation and media consolidation. By giving the general public access to publish their opinions on social media as well as merging businesses together to create large companies with major ownership, we have all been witness to major societal changes in the way we absorb information. Specifically, media consolidation and fragmentation can and have had negative effects on smaller communities as well as the general population in ways revolving around information absorption, transparency, and
Although social media creates real-time news reported by witnesses, it can also cause problems. The various amounts of news outlets that people are exposed to on social media can cause accuracy problems in the information received. News via social media might seem more subjective than objective coming from individual sources rather than big media outlets. News via social media has also advanced in the way that people receive it. News has never had the ability to receive active, real-time feedback like that we are able to do today because of technology. Journalist now have the ability to communicate to their audiences directly both publicly and privately, through that of live commenting and the ability to direct message people on certain platforms.
In today’s world, there aren’t many individuals in the United States that don’t use social media. Social media, such as Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, etc., can be used for many things. Some of those could be trying to advertise your business, contact a long-lost friend, or just using it for personal reasons. Whether an individual decides to use social media for business or for personal reasons is completely up to that individual, but some may be required by their employer to use social media to promote their business.
Facebook is slowly replacing the industry leading news stations like CNN, NBC and Fox News or in other words "the middleman" by directly connecting the public with the writer without the editor and publisher. Although that may have downsides most people seem to prefer it simply because it is not filtered on what a particular company wants to produce and gives less power to the major media companies that tend to sway people in a particular direction. To come up with a solution to the downside of Facebook comes many great ideas like creating an algorithm to spot unreliable news articles, or create a community that identifies misinformation for the benefit of everyone else, or creating a human team of journalist and policymakers that judges whether an article is factual. Although these theories have potential to be successful it is ultimately up to the viewer of the article to determine whether or not they want to research and confirm the information on the topic presented to them. Social media platforms have changed the way modern America perceives news forever with preferences to each profile and the ability to explore other types of information by entering a few keywords in a search bar is a method only a couple decades old and we should try to prevent from limiting this type of
Social Media is fast and endless, some other Apps like Instagram, Youtube, Tumblr, and Reddit ,again this is just a short list of where people are deciding to get their news stories from. “News plays a varying role across the social networking sites studied.Two-thirds of Facebook users (66%) get news on the site, nearly six-in-ten Twitter users (59%) get news on Twitter, and seven-in-ten Reddit users get news on that platform. On Tumblr, the figure sits at 31%, while for the other five social networking sites it is true of only about one-fifth or less of their user bases”(Pew
“Social media, a web-based and mobile technology, has turned communication into a social dialogue, and dominates the younger generation and their culture. As of 2010, Generation Y now outnumbers Baby Boomers, and 96% of Gen Y has joined a social network” (Qualman 1). Social media now accounts for the number one use of the Internet, and this percentage is rising bigger every day (Qualman). As a consequence, people are becoming more reliant on social media, which has a led to a number of advantageous as well as unfavorable effects. The world is more connected today than it has ever been in the past, and this is all because of growth in technology. What has yet to be determined though
Thirty years ago, if I told you that the primary means of communicating and disseminating information would be a series of interconnected computer networks you would of thought I was watching Star Trek or reading a science fiction novel. In 2010, the future of mass media is upon us today; the Internet. The Internet is and will only grow in the future as the primary means of delivering news, information and entertainment to the vast majority of Americans. Mass media as we know it today will take new shape and form in the next few years with the convergence and migration of three legacy mediums (Television, Radio, Newspaper) into one that is based on the Internet and will replace these mediums forever changing the face of journalism, media and politics. In this paper I will attempt to explain the transition of print media to one of the internet, how the shift to an internet based media environment will impact journalism and mass media, and how this migration will benefit society and forever change the dynamic of news and politics.
Social media can be used in our days as a very helpful tool for many things in changing any person’s life ant attitude. It has a positive impact on the society level. These media will keep the person socially active and open to all what happened in the world. Sharing the latest news, photos, finding new friends and knowing the culture. Also, it allows for millions to keep in touch with each other and update for all the new technology. And, it helps people who have difficulties in communication with others to be more socialized and stronger and develop more confidence to feel more comfortable, protected and relaxed just sitting behind a screen. “It saved me time and money without ever requiring me to leave the house; it salvaged my social life, allowed me to conduct interviews as a reporter and kept a lifeline open to my far-flung extended family” says Leonard(231).
