Music has always been an important part of my life. Although I do not remember the performances, I have home videos of myself singing in my church’s preschool choir. As I watched myself singing and grinning as a little three year old, I realized that must have been where my love of music began. It is amazing that I developed my passion in life so early. This passion caused me to become heavily involved in my church’s choirs and musical productions. I remember in 4th grade I was so proud and excited to have one of the main roles in our Christmas musical production. I remember being so happy to go to practice every night because I could not wait to be on that stage and sing my heart out. That same year I auditioned to be in the Alabama State Children’s Honor Choir and made it. This one audition began a new phase in my life and helped develop my interest in choral music. I participated in state honor choirs from 4th grade until 12th grade. In addition to this, I was able to participate in the Alabama Baptist music camps at Shocco Springs in Talladega, AL during the summers. From 6th grade until 9th I spent my summers learning about the importance of church worship music and how it can help spread the Gospel. After learning this, I was able to apply my knowledge by volunteering in my church’s preschool and children’s choirs. I volunteered from 7th grade until 12th and discovered my interest in teaching and passing along the joys of music to children. Also in 7th grade, I began taking voice lessons to better develop my own talent. ... day at work and relaxes by playing his guitar and Woody Allen plays clarinet weekly in a local jazz band for fun (Lipman). These men have continued to enjoy music throughout their lifetime. Music has brought great joy to my life, and as a music teacher, I want to show tomorrows generation how it can do the same for them.

Many people across the world are affected every day by the gift of music. To those of us who let it into our lives, we truly view it for what it is. Unfortunately, not everyone realizes how powerful it can be. For me singing was something that I was always good at; I never really took it to heart. I never understood when people would talk about how music had changed there lives; I just didn't see how a few notes put together could affect anyone so deeply. It wasn't until last April when our choir was chosen among a select few to perform at Carnegie Hall that I would understand the indubitable impact of music.

After graduating from high school, I entered Soochow University, whose music department is among the best in Taiwan. During these four years, I had numerous opportunities to perform on stage. Realizing early on that performance is the lifeblood of musicians, I joined as many orchestras, wood bands, and brass quintets as possible to acquire performance experience. Having numerous performing chances, and enjoying each of them, inspired me to become a professional musician in the future. Besides taking part in performing activities, I also used my experiences and knowledge to teach students. Believing that teaching others how to appreciate the beauty of life is fulfilling, I teach both to give knowledge and to enhance my own artistic ability. Because I so enjoyed my conversations with students, I remain committed to teaching and trying to convince others of the limitless joys of music.

Plato, a famous Greek philosopher, once stated, “I would teach children music, physics, and philosophy; but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning.” Often times, humans can be seen possessing the inner desire to achieve greatness through hard work and dedication to an ideal. Some aspire to accomplish simple everyday goals, such as getting up in time for work. Whatever the case may be, teens often try to find ways to achieve social and academic “checkpoints” so that their future seems heartier. Over the years, studies have been conducted regarding whether or not music has an influence on these achievements. These experiments have shown that music does help with many aspects of accomplishment. Because of these studies, it is imperative that society and the human race itself understand that a music education has an impact on social and academic achievement.
In one school district, administrators needed to make a budget cut of about $150,000. Immediately, they turned to their music programs and cut them, firing five music teachers in the process. They did not realize that there were over 2,000 students involved in the music programs. All of these students were then placed in other classes, increasing the class sizes and forcing the school to add 29 more classrooms and teachers. They ended up spending $192,000 total, instead of cutting the original $150,000 (Dorita, Coen, & Miller, 1994). It has been over two decades and many schools and administration still do not understand or see the importance of music in schools. Music education not only benefits student’s academics, but also helps student’s social life and improves brain function as well.
“Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent” (Hugo). During the Romantic era, Victor Hugo became one of the most well known French authors. Victor is typically known for his poetry and novels including Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. Through his inspirational work, Victor told stories of love, loss, and beauty in the world. Victor believes one of these beauties is music because of its ability to create, inspire, and embody someone’s thoughts and emotions. This mentality towards music is why society integrates music into the school systems. While the progress made by each individual is circumstantial, varying music programs in K-12 school systems need to be heavily provided and encouraged.
As an elementary school student she opened our ears and our young hearts to the wonderful world of music. Her love of music was infectious but the life lessons that she cleverly inserted were priceless. Music has the undeniable ability to transform an ordinary moment into a magical and emotional memory. The iconic musical, The Sound of Music, is just one example that comes to mind. Miss Dorsey taught us that every person, no matter their race, culture, socioeconomic background or life path- music a universal connect. Passion, love, heartache, and inspiration can all be conveyed and expressed through

Throughout the ages, music has been an integral part of individuals and society. Why has this practice withstood the tests of time? I believe it is because of the great power that it holds. I believe in that power. Music lifts the broken-hearted, celebrates with the joyful, can soften the hearts of the most impenetrable of souls, aides in expressing the inexpressible, and can even intensify feelings of love, hate, anger, joy, happiness, and intrigue. Music serves as one of the most effective forms of expression, communication, and therapy that we have.
