Behavior Change Theories and Planning Models The combination of behavior change theories and planning models are key in developing an intervention plan for several health care associated problems. Through these theories and models, health education specialists can research and find root causes to problems, factors that surrounded the health problem, point of risk factors, and develop a plan of action. These models not only educate the individuals struggling with health issues, but provide very important data that can later be used for further research. Behavior Change Theories According to the text, theories are “a set of interrelated concepts, definitions, and propositions that presents a systematic view of events or situations by specifying relations among variables in order to explain and predict the events of situations” (p.100). In short, theories help explain why things are in a less complex way for everyone to understand. Models are often thought to be one and the same as a theory; however, models can be further defined as “a composite, a mixture of ideas or concepts taken from any number of theories and used together” (p.101). The main difference between theories and models are that models combine theories and ideas to further explain these concepts and ideas. It is especially important to use theories in health education because they “help health education specialists with planning, implementing, and evaluating programs” (p.101). The Rosswurm and Larrabee (1999) change model will provide the basis for developing this EBP project. The change model step two includes locating the best evidence. Searching for the best evidence using electronic databases, journals, websites and books that are systematic reviewed. The literature our Change Team used came from sources using CINAHL, ProQuest, and MedlinePlus. According to Akers, “theories are tentative answers to the commonly asked questions about events and behavior.” Theory is a set of interconnected statements that explain how two or more things are related, based upon a confirmed hypotheses and established multiple times by disconnected groups of researchers.
Nursing theory can be applied to resolve nursing problems or issues, irrespective of the field of practice. A nursing theory benefits nurses and the patients that are in his or her charge. . Depending on the issue or problem that is needed to be solved determines what theory needs to be used. Nursing theory started with Florence Nightingale. She believed that a clean environment would promote better health. Virginia Henderson’s need theory emphasizes the need to ensure that the patient’s independence is being increased while in a health care facility. Ensuring that a patient can increase his or her independence allows for them to experience better outcomes upon discharge home. This is just two examples of nursing theories that were used
The school of Health Education is a practice whose effectiveness is difficult to be matched. From being taught in a classroom, to presenting to a community, the curriculum is designed to increase quality of life through a plethora of strategies. To create a uniformed method of transferring this knowledge to others successfully, different philosophies have been created for health educators to use as a sturdy foundation. Philosophy is imperative to one’s teaching mantra, for it determines how one lives, works, plays, and generally approaches life; all of which are necessary to consider when passing on knowledge and lifestyles to others. Of these different philosophies, I believe that the decision-making philosophy is the most beneficial to health educators, and that the behavior-change philosophy is the least.
The theory of planned behavior attempts to link health beliefs directly to behavior. Health beliefs take some time in predicting when people will change their health habits. According to Taylor a health behavior is the direct result of a behavioral intention done by the person. Behavior intentions are made up of three different components. The first one would be attitudes towards the specific action, then subjective norms regarding the action, and finally perceived behavioral control. Attitudes refers to actions that are performed and delivers outcomes, subjective norms refer to what the person believes others think they should do, and perceived behavior refers to the person acknowledging that they can perform the intended action.

... wants their patients to start eating healthier it could help give them ideas on how to change their patient’s intentions. The health care provider could help the patient realize that the important people in their life want them to eat healthy, and this could help change their behavior. They could educate them on the effects of eating healthier and ultimately change their attitude about eating healthy. For example, the patient does not have to cut junk food out completely; they just have to eat it in moderation. This is just one situation were the theories could help in the health care field. There are many other ways these theories are useful. It is important to understand these theories in order to understand that behavior is affected by someone’s intentions. This makes it easier to understand what affects a person’s intentions and how they can be changed.
