Character Parallels in To Kill a Mockingbird
In real life there are many different types of people, some of them are similar
to one another, while others can be opposite/different, just like in the book To Kill
a Mocking Bird, by Harper Lee. There are many people in the book, some people are
contradictory to one another (character foils), while others resemble each other
(character parallels) in both good and/or bad ways.
Atticus Finch and Aunt Alexander is an example of a character foil in the book.
Even though they are brother and sister and grew up together, they are two people with
very different views. Atticus is more easy going when he raises up Jem and Scout, for
example he lets his kids call him Atticus, and let's Scout dress with the clothes that
she feels comfortable in. While on the other hand Aunt Alexander is more strict, she
cares a lot about family background and she wants Scout to act and dress more "lady like".
Atticus views that it is his duty to do his best in the Tom Robinson trial and feels no
prejudice against Tom, because he is black. While Aunt Alexander doesn't like Atticus
taking the case because Tom is black, and wants Atticus to go and fire Calpurnia.
Tom Robinson and Bob Ewell is another example of a character foil in the book
To Kill a Mocking Bird. Bob Ewell and Tom Robinson are two completely different people
in the story. They both don't have a lot of money, but Tom Robinson chooses to work hard
for his money, while Bob Ewell lives off welfare and sqaunders all his money on booze
and whiskey. Bob Ewell beats up on his daughter Mayella, while Tom tries to do all that he
can in order to help her out. Tom says that he did not beat and rape Mayella, while Bob Ewell
says that he did.
Two characters that are similar to each other are Tom Robinson and Boo (Arthur)
Radley. These two are similar in that there are false rumors going on about them.
People accused Tom of beating and raping Mayella Ewell, and people talk about Boo, and
say that he is a very violent person, when those things are both false.
Polio, formerly known as poliomyelitis, an infectious viral disease that affects the central nervous system and can cause temporary or permanent paralysis. A debilitating disease that was once the affliction of our very own republic. David Oshinsky’s Polio: An American Story chronicles polio’s progression in the United States, a feat it does quite well throughout the course of the novel.
At this point, Atticus receives his call to adventure and has to determine whether to take the case or not. In the beginning, Atticus realizes the attention that this case will bring and what it’ll mean for his family. He knows that it will expose his children to the cruelties of society that he’s tried to protect them from. Atticus comes to the conclusion that if he refuses the case, there will be no one else to take it and he’d essentially be declaring Tom guilty from the start. He knows that the chances of Tom getting off innocent is slim, although he needed to try for the sake of his own conscious and for everything he tries to instill in his children. This is where the psychological journey for Atticus and his family begins as they battle their own morals against the widely held prejudice in the
...t and dark, art and pain, choice and regret, cruelty and sacrifice.” [Libba Bray] The character “foils” within Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird add a real meaning of development, and complexity in the story that grasps the readers attention. It can be seen that each pair of characters are present in a way that the readers are able to show the contrast between each pair and can acknowledge and recognize a “good” character from a “bad” one. This contrast is most evident in the way each character deals with a situation. It is essential that, as readers, we do not assume that certain characters are the same due to some of the likeness that they have because each person has their own personality that creates the true image of their individual that is being described. In this world, there will be both good and evil because that is what creates balance in the world.
Both men throughout the book suppress their feelings for their wives until something goes wrong. At that point, both men are willing to fight for their wives and do what is necessary to get them back or avenge for their pain. We see this when Tom, Jordan, Nick, Gatsby, and Daisy are all at the apartment and Tom has just found...
The main reason Atticus should take the stand and defend Tom Robinson is because he needs to protect his honor. This is illustrated by Atticus’s words,
She is very strict and very gossipy and later becomes Scout and Jem 's guardian in a way.
Atticus says, “I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again”,(100). That quote from Atticus shows that it would not make sense for him to tell his children not to do something, if he will not do something of his own. Atticus also says,” I couldn’t hold up my head in town”(100). That demonstrates that, just like any other man in Maycomb pride is important, so if Atticus can not hold his head up high, then he sees no point in moving forward in his life.Due to the fact that Atticus is too proud of a man to not take the case,it makes sense for him to protect Tom Robinson.
The most prevalent example of characters that are foils is the pair of Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton. These two men are extraordinarily similar, and yet they are also polar opposites. When Darnay and Carton are both introduced for the first time in the courthouse scene in Book the Second, Dickens immediately ensures that the reader is aware of the comparison. Darnay is acquitted of treason simply because the witnesses are unsure of their testimony after seeing Carton’s near-identical features. In addition to virtually sharing a countenance, the two also tend to dress alike throughout the novel. However, these similarities are merely the backdrop by which to accentuate the key differences between the characters. These are also recognized early on, even by the dim-witted Jerry Cruncher: “so alike each other in feature, so unlike each other in manner” (80). Carton is a relatively poor Englishman, while Darnay is a privileged French aristocrat. Although they have similar capabilities, Darnay uses his situation in life to his advantage, and Carton develops a disrespectful attitude and alcoholism. When the characters themselv...
Knowledge of Polio has seemingly decreased throughout the years, but there is no denying its terrifying impact on parents of the early 20th century. What many people are unaware of is the fact that Polio is caused by a virus that can be spread by simple person-to-person contact (History of Polio). Secretions from the nasal and oral cavities as well as contact with bodily waste (feces) lead to the spread of this virus. Upon contact with a “contaminated” person, the virus travels through the mouth, growing and reproducing new cells as it moves along the digestive tract (History of Polio). In the most severe cases of Polio, the virus exits the digestive organs and enters the bloodstream where it wages war with nerve cells. This results in throat and chest paralysis and possibly even death (History of Polio).
These blades are made again of carbon fiber. This carbon fiber material is used in order to protect the core of the blade of the hockey stick which is a small bladder between two pieces of foam. These pieces of foam help to cushion the impact on the blade when hitting a puck, and it also increases the speed at which a player can shoot a puck. It takes thirty-five layers of carbon fiber in order to protect the blade from breaking when hitting a puck. After these layers are wrapped around the blade, the blade is packed into a heated mold and pressurized using eight tons of pressure in order to combine all the layers of carbon fiber together. At this same time, the bladder inside of the blade expands as well, which puts pressure on the blade from the inside out. After these blades cool they are inserted into the shaft of the hockey stick, and they are secured using a super strong glue. After the hockey sticks are strength tested, they are painted, designed, and ready to be used on the ice
If Atticus didn't take on the case, he couldn't hold his head up in town; couldn't represent this country in the legislature; couldn't even tell Scout or Jem not to do something again'. "...before I can live with other folks I've got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience."
Throughout the novel, Atticus’ assistance to Jem and Scout’s development becomes evident. Atticus takes every opportunity to attempt to teach his children the importance of having an open-mind. For instance, when Scout queries Atticus about Maycomb’s prejudice perspective, he tells her, “You never really understand a person until…you climb in their skin and walk around in it.” (Lee 30) Even during the early stages of the novel, it is apparent that Atticus endeavors to instill the values of empathy and tolerance within Jem and Scout by teaching them how to have multiple perspectives on a situation. In addition, Atticus also attempts to enlighten his children about peaceful resolution in society. For example, when Atticus is chosen to defend Tom Robinson, Atticus tells Scout, you might hear some ugly talk about it at school but…you just hold your head high and keep those fists down.”...
The Columbine high school, located in Littleton, Colorado, never expected that two of their older students would turn against them and commit such a crime. Eric Harris, 18, and Dylan Klebold, 17, were “social outcasts” and were fascinated by Goth culture and violent video games. The major question that has been spinning in everyone’s mind since that day is, “Did the video games and media influence them to kill, or did they have a mental illness; born as murders?”
...on’s reign as mayor, he fought for fair taxation and municipal ownership over the streetcar industry and public utilities. Through his usage of the initiative, referendum, and recall, it allowed the voters to have an undeviating say in legislative and judicial issues as he wanted a greater and better democracy. In Wisconsin, Robert M. La Follette took advantage of the grassroots movement for reform in order to launch his lengthy political career, first as a governor (1901-1905) then a United States senator (1906-1925). As governor, La Follette lowered railroad rates, raised railroad taxes, improved education, preached conservation, established factory regulation and workers’ compensation, and inaugurated the first state income tax.
Poliomyelitis is a dangerous viral disease which can lead to either partial or full paralysis of the human body. This infectious disease was a worldwide epidemic with more than twenty thousand cases reported throughout the world. It was only until 1955 when the Salk inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) was introduced which very successfully started supressing the disease. This disease is affiliated with the enterovirus subgroup of ‘Picornaviridae’ family. It is classified as three serotypes: PV1, PV2 and PV3. The infection is sprea...
