AN OVERVIEW OF TARGET COSTING
Introduction
Many managers often underestimate the power of target costing as a serious competitive tool. When general managers read the word "costing", they naturally assume it is a topic for their finance or accounting staff. They miss the fact that target costing is really a systematic profit and cost management process.
What Is Target Costing?
CAM-I defines target costing as the maximum amount of cost that can be incurred on a product and still earn the required profit margin from that product. This is captured by the equation
Target Cost = Price – Profit
At first sight the equation appears to reverse the familiar cost plus price equal profit that many firms use. However, behind the inversion of the equation are two very powerful ideas; (1) market price and profit margins are exogenous variables beyond the control of an organization’s management; and (2) customer and financial markets drive cost planning and not the other way around. Target costing, therefore, is a market driven system in which the needs of the customer and the likely reaction of competitors drive product and profit planning.
Target costing has six key principles:1
1. Price-led costing. Market prices are used to determine allowable or target costs.
2. Focus on customers. Customer requirements for quality, cost, and time are simultaneously incorporated in product and process decisions and guide cost analysis. The value (to the customer) of any features and functionality built into the product must be greater than the cost of providing those features and functionality.
3. Focus on design. Cost control is emphasized at the product and process design stage. Therefore, engineering changes must occur before production begins, resulting in lower costs and reduced “time-to-market” for new products.
4. Cross-functional teams. Cross-functional product and process teams are responsible for the entire product from initial concept through final production.
5. Value-chain involvement. All members of the value chain, e.g., suppliers, distributors, service providers, and customers, are included in the target costing process.
6. Life cycle cost reduction. Total life-cycle costs are minimized for both the producer and

the customer. Life-cycle costs include purchase price, operating costs, maintenance, and distribution costs.
The Target Costing Process
To maximize cost control and enhance profit improvement, most companies set relatively aggressive targets. The process begins when top management establishes a target cost for a new product (e.

An organization costing system is a system that helps the management with the strategy planning while the system plays an important role in providing accurate cost information about the products and customers (Curtin, 2006). UPS utilizes the Activity-Based Costing (ABC) system. ABC assumes that activities cause costs and that cost objects create the demand for activities (Marx, 2009). The key to cost allocation under ABC is to identify the activities that are performed to provide a particular service and then aggregate the costs of the activities (Gapenski, 2012). This is a marked departure from the practice of sharing overheads costs equally or overheads becoming part of the overall profit-loss estimate instead of component product pricing (Nayab, 2011).
Calculating the right price for a product can be difficult, mostly because it will affect Calibrated’s bottom line. Increasing the price of a product to maximize profit can induce several risks to a company. For example, making a change to the fixed or variable costs, the number of units sold will have an impact on the company’s profitability. In 2004, the author published the third revision of it and celebrated selling over than three million copied of it around the world. Also, the goal book is taught in over than 120 collages. Activity-based costing (ABC) is a costing method that is designed to provide managers with cost information for strategic and other decisions that potentially affect capacity and therefore “fixed” as well as variable costs. Activity-based costing is mostly used for internal decision making and managing activities while traditional costing method is used to provide data for external financial reports. Most organization uses activity-based costing as an addition system for using traditional absorption costing as sometimes the traditional cost system misleads the product’s profitability. In a company, there are many products on sale, if one product is sold at a high price with low product margin and a product with high product margin at a low price, it may result in a loss. In addition, due to the reason that cost drivers and enterprises business may change, activity-based costing analysis also needs to be revised periodically. This amendment should be prompted to change pricing, product, customer focus and market share strategy to improve corporate profitability.
Job costing involves usage of situations where every job is done cost differently, consumers specifications play a bigger picture in this case. Direct and indirect costs are encountered. It is believed that job costing has lots of costs accrued from the production to the consumers (REEVE, J. M., WARREN, C. S., & DUCHAC, J. E. 2012). This involves labor, running of machines, and all the individuals who are involved in the production of a product from raw to the final product, indirect costs are applied in this order. Job costing order is best showcased in a manufacturing company, let’s take coca cola company, company specialized in beverages manufacturing and distribution, usually customers have no say in the final products of this company, but as the trends for consumption of a certain flavor, according to their statistics they will conform with the demands. The special requirements, like name branding on the bottles of the beverages, customization of the containers have had a significant impact in the consumption of coca cola products (Weygandt, J. J., Kieso, D. E., & Kimmel, P. D. 2010).
Target costing is most applicable to companies that compete by continually issuing a stream of new or upgraded products into the marketplace (such as consumer goods). For them, target costing is a key survival tool. Conversely, target costing is less necessary for those companies that have a small number of legacy products that require minimal updates, and for which long-term profitability is more closely associated with market penetration and geographical coverage (such as soft
