Abraham Lincoln: The Great Leader

Abraham Lincoln, one of the greatest presidents of the United States. During his attempt to keep the Union in the Civil War, he gained more power and authority than any president before him. He was an excellent politician, and was always looked upon for leadership because he put reason and thoughtful decisions behind his word. Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in Hodgenville, KY .He was raised in a log cabin built by his father, Thomas Lincoln. His mother’s was Nancy Lincoln. He had one older sister, and a younger brother that died as an infant. The Lincoln family moved frequently from Kentucky to Indiana, and back to Kentucky. He never had a normal full education. He read two books that truly left a lasting impression on his life, these books inspired him and motivated him throughout his life. When he was nineteen he reached his full height of six feet four inches. He held small jobs such as a clerk, postmaster and a few others through his early twenties. He assured his cabinet that the Emancipation Proclamation would only apply to states that belonged to the Confederacy only. That was a major cause of the Civil War. Lincoln was always breaking laws though. On April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth planned to assassinate Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln was at the Ford 's theater in Washington watching” Our American Cousin”. Booth made his way to the box where Abraham Lincoln was seated, then he took his gun and fired. He shot Abraham Lincoln. That night as his wife stood by him, the doctors tried to save Lincoln 's life. The very next morning, April 15, 1865 Abraham Lincoln died, and a few hours later Vice President Andrew Jackson was sworn in as the seventeenth president of the United
