Database Processing Applications
Computers are one of the most important things of everyday life. However, for most of us do not realize that the thing inside of that computer that makes the computer what it is. The thing that helps us communicate and create with a computer is the applications in which we install on the computer that give the computer its personal. One application is the one that companies use to store; share data on a database system, in order to be successful called a database processing application. Database processing applications can be defined by their history, environment as well as web processing application.
In order to understand database processing application, first we must look at the history of database processing and how it evolved in the technology world. Originally database processing was used in major corporations and large organizations as the basis of large transaction-processing systems. These systems where called file-processing. However, as the larger corporations were processing a phenomenal amount of data in the file-processing system, the data was becoming impossible to manage. Therefore, in 1960, the first applications of databases created were to resolve the problems with the file processing systems. Likewise, the new system was also a problem because of the development difficulties. However, management continued to push in order to have a more effective way to relate data from one file system to another easier (Kean University, 2013).

One of the evolutions that are happening now is the infusions of database storage with the decision support system. A database can make a connection or determine relationships on its own with minimal human intervention (Databases: Past, Present, and Future, 2013).

The first database systems were based on the network and hierarchical models. A database can be defined as a collection of non-redundant data which can be shared by different application systems. A database implies separation of physical storage from use of the data by an application program to achieve program/data independence. In 1977, Larry Ellison, Bob Miner, and Ed Oates founded System Development Laboratories. After being inspired by a research paper written in 1970 by an IBM researcher titled “A Relational Model of Data for Large Shared Data Banks” they decided to build a new type of database called a relational database system. The original project on the relational database system was for the government (Central Intelligence Agency) and was dubbed ‘Oracle.’ They thought this would be appropriate because the meaning of Oracle is source of wisdom.
This paper will compare and contrast five different database management systems on six criteria. The database management systems (DBMS) that will be discussed are SQL Server 2000, Access, MySQL, DB2, and Oracle. The criteria that will be compared are the systems’ functionality, the requirements that must be met to run the DBMS, the expansion capabilities – if it is able to expand to handle more data over time, the types of companies that typically use each one, the normal usage of the DBMS, and the costs associated with implementing the DBMS.

There are many different types of databases, different performances of databases, and different database software functions. Before we get to much into databases lets take a step back and think about what a database really is and how they are applied. A database is a software program arranged to collect hold and process information. There are quite a bit of software programs out there already that can allow you to do all this. However, what makes databases different is that once you enter information in to, the database will operate the information in ways that allow you to analyze the information. Databases are designed in such a way that as to make it easier to obtain particular pieces of data. Databases are used in many ways existing in pretty much the entire world of computers. Databases are the most used method of storage for large multiuser funtions where the coordination between many users is necessary. This is just basically what a database is.
System performance is one of the most critical issues faced by companies dealing with vast amounts of data. Companies use database systems and their applications to store, retrieve and handle this data.
