In preparation for this reflection paper, I read the texts, reflected on my life experiences, and then identified the following key theme. David Shipler’s “The Working Poor,” The fact that people in the social welfare system do work at menial jobs and not necessarily because they are required by welfare to do so, shows that most people do want to contribute and be a part of working society. While reading the about the families in New Hampshire, I was reminded of the classism that occurred between the two worlds of rich and poor. In stark contrast to rural New Hampshire, southern New Hampshire where I grew up is an hour outside of Boston, the area I lived in was filled with pilots and executives. Besides being rich everyone had the expectation that their child would go to college. My town looked like a Norman Rockwell painting and for its size boasted two country clubs. Upon turning sixteen teenagers would receive the newest sports car. This in contrast to the rural New Hampshire people in Shipler’s book, who are a captive audience to the mill’s opening and closing or downsizing and ultimately the victims to the corporate bottom line. Likewise what struck me was how people in my town used to refer to the northerners, making fun of them (and this was the adults), Now, I can see that a firm link between making money and being good was established for me growing up where I did and with the class of people I associated with. Furthermore, when I read “Glass Castles” by Jeannette Walls, the family had moved to Welch one boy in particular was determined to put Jeannette and her siblings in their place by shouting “ Garbage! You live in garbage ‘cause you are garbage!” How does this relate to “The Working Poo...

Why does it matter? Any nation that wants to call itself civilized as a responsibility to make sure that those who require assistance receive it.
What will I do in the future in light of the learning? In the future I will continue to address the dignity and responsibility of the individual on a case by case basis. The Working Poor exemplifies that social services and the people that are in the system are too numerous and even toady with the amount of fraud and the infant mortality rate being where they are it seems even the experts are unsure how exactly to fix the system. I believe Shipler and Walls books both exemplify my case that we in the social service would do better to address each individual without pigeonholing anyone to their circumstances.
Firstly, the rhetor appeals to the reader’s sense of patriotism by discussing a system (in the restaurant industry) that disallows the pursuit of the American Dream. The rhetor writes about how people are forced to live with low wages and being in poverty when they shouldn’t. They put in a very large amount of work in their jobs and get little reward for what they do. This changes the way society works and allows for an enlargement of the amount of people below the poverty line. People (in America) feel entitled to certain rights including economic freedom. The author appeals to the emotions of the American people by subtly suggesting an infringement of freedom. In a larger picture, this problem of income disparity is addressed nationwide, people look to politicians to fix the “evergrowing” income gap between the upper and lower income levels. A big disadvantage that the lower class has compared to the wealthy is a lack of quality education. While serving as a waitress, Ehrenriech learned about many different people. Some of these co-workers were immigrants who had recently come to this country. “I learn that he [George] is not paid by Jerry’s but the ‘agent’ who shipped him over--$5 an hour, with the agent getting the dollar or so difference between that and what Jerry’s pays dishwashers”(38). In "Bums in the Attic," a chapter from her novel The House on Mango Street, Sandra Cisneros discusses the differences between groups in which the upper class ignores anyone not belonging to the same leisure status. Those belonging to the lower classes however, has had to work to gain success and cannot forget the past in which he struggled. In chasing the American dream, the lower class realizes that the only way to gain true happiness from monetary success, one cannot forget his past and must therefore redefine the traditional attitude of the upper class.
America tries to stand for equality, but our system does not properly help the disadvantaged. In “The Land of Opportunity” Loewen’s first year college students do not understand why people are poor and simply think that it is their own fault for being poor. High school students are not learning about social inequality or class structure. The ideas that they are going to College with are not accurate and the textbooks in public schools are partially to blame for this. Coming from a background of poverty, Bell Hooks understands the moral values and work ethic of the poor and the privileged. In The Working Poor: Invisible in America, David K. Shipler describes about the lives of United States citizens who live within poverty. He highlights the U.S.’s disregard for its working poor, the nature of poverty, and the causes of poverty faced by low-wage earners. Shipler performs an amazing job with describing the factors that play their parts into the lives of U.S. citizens who live are poor and within poverty.

Class for the purpose of this paper is the concept that those who are better off are of what can be considered to be upper class and those that lack financial means are of the lower class. Mantsios says that there is an absence of discussion in reference to the distinctions of classes (697). In a study performed by Susan Ostrander, in regards to the term “upper class” one woman responded “‘I hate to use the word ‘class.’ We are responsible, fortunate people, old families, the people who have something’” (697). Yet it appears to be opposite that those who are in this lower class realize the plight they suffer. As one student from Fremont High School noted, “‘The owners of the sewing factories need laborers. Correct…It’s not going be their own kids… You’re ghetto,’ said Fortino unrelentingly to her. ‘So Sew!’”(Kozol 645). The student who knew that he was more than likely to be stuff in his place was willing to point out this fault of the system. This topic which more than likely the well-off woman would stray from rather because she had life easier than Fortino will in his lifetime.
In our current society, it is acceptable to talk about race or gender. However, when it comes to the subject of class, people tend to tense, and are uncertain as to where they stand. At one time in history money afforded prestige and power, however now, money is a large part of our society and tends to rule many peoples lives. In the book Where We Stand: Class Matters, by bell hooks, she describes a life growing up in a family who had nothing, to now becoming one of America’s most admired writers. She wrote this book because she wanted to write about her journey from a working class world to class-consciousness, and how we are challenged everyday with the widening gap between the rich and the poor. In her book, hook’s describes a life dominated by the haunting issues of money, race, and class.
According to Schwartz-Nobel, America will lose as much as 130 billion in future productive capacity for every year that 14.5 American children continue to live in poverty (Koppelman and Goodhart, 2007). Sadly the seriousness of poverty is still often clouded by myths and misunderstandings by society at large. This essay studies the issue of poverty and classism in today's society.
The reading brings to mind those that render our communities a humble service, working in what society may deem as a dead end job; the terminology often used for those in low wage jobs described being one paycheck away from the unemployment line is still ultimately responsible if they are not thriving. In the Working Poor, David Shipler shows the different levels of poverty in the United States. Although many people work every day they still do not have enough money to live their lives comfortably or contently. In chapter 1, Money and Its Opposite, discuss the different people that worked hard their entire lives only to remain in or below the poverty line. For instance, in the book Shipler speaks of the disadvantages that the working poor are susceptible to. Often being taken advantage of from employers that do not give accesses that they are entitled to, the working poor are more likely to be audit than the wealthy, and become victims of cons that point toward money for a small payment, first. The many that live in poverty often overspend.
In the early 1900s, the American South had very distinctive social classes: African Americans, poor white farmers, townspeople, and wealthy aristocrats. This class system is reflected in William Faulkner’s novel, As I Lay Dying, where the Bundrens a poor, white family, are on a quest to bury their now deceased wife and mother, Addie in the town of Jefferson. Taking a Marxist criticism approach to As I Lay Dying, readers notice how Faulkner’s use of characterization reveals how country folk are looked down upon by the wealthy, upper class townspeople.
The ever evolving meaning of class in todays’ society is loaded with many adverse senses and invites moral disapproval, also known as ‘exploitation’, where profit is extracted from resources which ultimately reinforces the ongoing inequality among the minority of Australians. This is evident in both Marx and Wrights theories as they are equally carried out in diverse ways. Analytical Marxism approaches the issue of class by focusing on the scientific explanation, whereas, Wrights theory of class values pragmatic research and is open to having his ideas and concepts modified , unlike Marx. In the Marxist theory, he reflects how our physical and emotional life can be affected by our feelings towards work and expenses . He similarly states that
Stratification across the states has created a divide between classes. It has allowed the upper class to solely remain with the upper class, while the working class only associates with the working class. It has caused people to only feel comfortable within their own class. Stratification has allowed people to see others as those to be feared or as those to be ignored. It has also created an unspoken boundary that says it is wrong to associate with another class.
