Choosing a career is one of the most important decisions a person will make in their life. Most people try to pick the career with the best financial gain and something they would like to do for the rest of their life. Foremost it is wise to see what the job entails. Sport Management is perfect for those who enjoy helping and working with people, especially when dealing with sports. The next part of the decision-making process is looking through the various schooling and training required. Lastly, take into consideration the advantages and disadvantages. Usually with great salaries comes a big responsibility with high stress. “The sports industry in the U.S. is a $200-billion-dollar-plus powerhouse, with superstar athletes, lucrative endorsement deals, and all the free press an ego can handle” (Lawyue 1). The profession of a sport management professional has a very specific work description, requires specific schooling and training, and comes with a variety of benefits and disadvantages. As time progresses, watching and supporting sports is becoming more and more popular as a main source of entertainment. Many people have found ways to connect their jobs with their passion of sports. “The multibillion-dollar sports industry offers employment opportunities for management, marketing, and supervisory professionals at all levels of competition” (Sports Management 1). Depending on a person’s interests, there are jobs in professional, amateur, and even school sports. My senior project is about being a coach and how it can be difficult and not an easy task. I wanted to show others that being a coach is something that takes time and effort in order to accomplish it. Being a coach is not a fun job but it is a job that will help you in the future. Coaching is an experience that not a lot of people get to go through but those who do become not just better people but they become teachers to others in troubling times and in time of need. Coaching gives you and also shows you that being helpful and courteous to others actually helps you out as a person and it also helps out the players you’re coaching to be better people and to be kind and not take things in the wrong way and to show them a better way that will help them in their life.
As modification of higher education becomes more and more of a focal point for our country, sport psychologists have begun to focus their attention on athletes and their pursuit of exceptional athletic performance in elite sports and the extent to which this pursuit affects personal development. According to Lavallee (2005), previous research has found that collegiate athletes are more likely to have lower levels of career maturity and delayed career development than their non-athletic counterparts. In addition, researchers also found that collegiate athletes were less able to develop mature career and educational plans than other fellow college students. Therefore, this suggests that the education made available to collegiate athletes to develop career knowledge is lacking or incomplete; indicating that future research should be more focused on the personal development of athletes.
Working at a school would not have been a top choice but as an athletic director it seems fun and enjoyable. An athletic director oversees all school sports and makes sure that everyone follows the rules and does not disobey the coaches (Bean-Mellinger, Barbara). They also have to attend all games and matches that are scheduled (Hinginbotham, Heather). As well as attending all the games they have to hire the officials that are needed for the games (Higinbotham, Heather). Athletic directors also might have to fire coaches and other athletic department employees if needed (Bean-Mellinger, Barbara). They also have to set or approve job descriptions for each position (Bean-Mellinger, Barbara). Every athletic director job is different depending on the size of school; their daily routine might be different from others. In smaller schools the athletic director might have to teach classes as well as do their own job. But as for larger school they will only be an athletic director. In some jobs they are physical education teachers as well as an athletic director (Baccadutre).
College athletes have a goal that they pursue. The jump to the professional sports leagues is an accomplishment that most college athletes wanted to achieve. But most college athletes go to college and forego completing their senior year and don’t get a degree. In basketball most athletes are one and done. This means they go to college for only one year then enter the NBA draft. For the NFL players have to be out of high school for three years and necessarily don’t have to go to college.
Many people are more active today than they were many years ago. Injury prevention and diagnosis plays a big role in today’s society. Preventing an injury is important for many athletes all over the world, and for people that are physically active. Preventing injuries can benefit an athlete in the long run. Athletic trainers help athletes and physically active people stay healthy for what they do on a daily basis.
Although the management aspects are critical, one of the most demanding roles for the Collegiate Athletic Administrator is the selection of personnel. AD’s bring with them

Today many parents associate sports with success and therefore pressure their children to excel in sports. In today’s society it is very rare that fears of discrimination would cause children to not pursue a lucrative career in sports. Both Miller and Wilson knew the impact of sports on family dynamics, and how sports have evolved from a leisure time activity to a full-time commitment. Clearly, many of the qualitative aspects of sports--competition, teamwork and physical dexterity can contribute to being a success in almost any career.
Sports have always been my passion, from playing in middle school to managing in high school and college. My family has always been very sports oriented, and when a knee injury halted my plans of playing sports in high school, I turned to something that could keep me involved without the ability to play: managing. I started out managing my high school volleyball team when I got cut sophomore year due to my inability to play well because of my knee. Keeping stats during the matches became a fun activity for me, but I also was able to stay a part of the team and make some friends that I will keep for the rest of my life. Junior year of high school, I was approached by the varsity boys’ basketball coach. He asked if I would be willing to manage because he had heard great things from the volleyball coach and was in need of a manager. After talking to my parents and looking at my daily schedule, I agreed. This turned out to be the best decision of my high school career.
