Introduction Most people describe their pharmacist as a white, middle aged bald man standing behind a desk counting pills 9 to 5 five days a week. However, most people fail to realize that the new and upcoming pharmacists are being equipped with the knowledge in college to be able to come out from behind their desk. These pharmacists are getting on the floor to recommend medicines based on their own specialization of drug effects, dosage and content and physical symptom analysis. According the Dan Brony in his article "Causes of Prescribing Errors in Hospital Inpatients: A Prospective Study" with many chronic conditions like asthma and migraine headaches are under diagnosed and not medicated properly, there is a need for pharmacists to use the skill set they have and specialization is drug knowledge, the modern pharmacists is taking on more roles and able to give accurate medication recommendations. Working in the pharmaceutical industry, there are different types of environments you could possibly work in. There are chain pharmacies, like any kind of grocery store or CVS. There are franchise pharmacies, which are also known as apothecaries. Also, there are community pharmacies, which are also known as retail pharmacies. Some of them are independent pharmacies, which is usually owned by a pharmacist or a group of pharmacists.. There are hospital pharmacies, in which are in the hospital. A pharmacist has many responsibilities and has a very big workload. A pharmacist is responsible for dispensing the correct medication and in the correct dosage. The pharmacist is responsible for looking for any errors in the prescription and talking with the physician who prescribe it if any errors are found. The pharmacist is also responsible for looking for any bad reactions with the patients other medication that may cause problems. Another responsibility of being a pharmacist is to counsel people on both prescribed medication and over the counter medication. The pharmacist is the specialist you go to when you need assistance or advice with any of your medication. Daily a pharmacist would fill dozens of prescriptions per hour. With a high amount of prescriptions being filled also raises the risk for error. The pharmacist must be certain that they have read the prescription correctly and have filled the prescription correctly.

The pharmacy technician who receives no formal training is responsible for not just the delivery of a patient’s medication, but also for their bill, their confidential information, and their life. The question now is, how can an uneducated individual be given so much responsibility? Technicians are granted these responsibilities because a pharmacist can not do the job alone. Pharmacists strive to mold each new technician into an employee that will realize what technicians really do. Pharmacists and technicians provide patients with safe and accurate medication in a timely manner. This is not a task for pharmacists or technicians alone; it is task that requires both personnel in order to be accomplished.

Curious about how medications work, I always ask why when given a treatment. Without health insurance, my family used to rely on inexpensive medications over the counter as a doctor’s visit was hardly affordable. The various medications for my recurring tonsil infections left me pondering the rationale behind them. I wish there were someone who could tell us whether we were taking the right medications. My determination to become that person to help those with trouble accessing health care raised my desire for higher education. Amazed as I was by science courses, I wanted to push forward and make my knowledge useful. My eagerness to learn about medications in depth and apply that knowledge to help others with the effective use of medications urged me to forge ahead with a pharmacy career.
