A child’s healthy development is crucial to the growth of a strong society. In order for a child to progress successfully, it is essential to have the father in the juvenile’s life. It has been proven that, the “father’s love appears to be as heavily implicated as a mother’s love in offspring’s psychological well-being and health ” (Rohner & Veneziano, 2001, p. 382-405). It has also been shown, “that fathers make important contributions to their children's cognitive and behavioral functioning” (Pougnet, Schwartzman, Serbin, & Stack, 2011, p.173-182). Unfortunately without the father, “sons obtained lower scores for all the moral indexes significantly lower for internal moral judgment, maximum guilt following transgressions, acceptance of blame, moral values, and rule conformity; and were rated by teachers as significantly more aggressive than father-present boys” (Hoffman & Michigan, 1971, p. 400-406), and “reported father–daughter relationships characterized by rejection, chaos, and coercion had lower morning cortical levels and were temperamentally more sensitive to emotional changes” (Auer, Byred-Craven, Granger, & Massey, 2012, p.87-94). It is then understood that if the father is in the child’s life or absent from his/her life, the child will be affected. To begin with, there was a study dealing with delinquent and non-delinquent boys. The study showed that “the great majority of delinquents felt rejected by their fathers but not necessarily by their mothers. Non-delinquents, on the other hand, tended to feel loved by both parents” (Rohner &Veneziano, 2001,p. 382-405). There was no change in the behavior of the boys when the maternal love was present. A child’s destiny crucially and heavily relies on the parental figures in their lives. Without such beacons of authority children in these broken homes easily feel partial, mislaid and typically turn out to be errant. The novel “Father Cry” by William Wilson, beautifully covers both the ideas of spiritual parental figures and physical parental figures. Analyzing several different subjects such as heartbreak, love, hope and many more, this book is able to holistically cover the general subject of parenthood. This is an amazing book with many things that one can learn from. Many ideas and topics in this book opened my eyes, pushing me to the verge of tears in some parts. Children who do not grow up in a two parent homes, are more likely to fail and repeat a grade in school. It is also important to note that children who grow up in single parent families are less likely to have parents involved with the school, 62% of children with two parent homes have parents that are involved in school, while children from single parent homes have half of them involved in school (Nord, Winquist, West, 2001).

The father’s upbringing was such that financial stability was the priority. The child learned that dads are busy and do not have time to spend with their children. What a devastating realization for a child to conclude. Yet like most little boys, this one wanted to grow up to be like his role model, no matter the example. During the time from childhood to adolescent, parental influence can be either beneficial or detrimental. If the parents have a stable home, clear boundaries and open communications with their teens, the transition could flow easier. The perfect father does not guarantee the child will not rebel.
In the short story The Father by Hugh Garner there is boy who’s father is not involved in his life. This is mostly because he is always drunk. Because of this Johnny, the father’s son, has not really been able to connect with his father. He is never there for Johnny when he needs him and is always embarrassing him. This made me really sad as I cannot imagine living without a loving father. I do not think that anyone should have to live without the care of their father. I can only imagine how sad that Johnny must have felt to not have a good father in his life. When someone thinks about the definition of a father, he or she thinks about the support, care, love, and knowledge a father gives to his offspring. Most people automatically believe that biological fathers, along with the mothers, raise their children. However, that is not always the case. There are many children across the world who are raised without their father. These children lack a father figure. People do not realize how detrimental the lack of a father figure can be to the child, both mentally and emotionally. Enrolling boys between the ages of 5 to 16 without father figures in programs, such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, that involve building a relationship with someone who can serve as a role model is essential to prevent males from depression, difficulty in expressing emotions, and other consequences of having an absent father figure.
