The Influence of Mythology Ancient myths are the foundation on which societies around the world are based. Ancient myths have an enormous effect on human behavior because they are true stories that provided examples to the believer within a given society. Each society has their own myth, or myths that serve as guides to help the community establish a purpose, a meaning, and a sense of direction. Two ancient societies are famous for their mythology. These societies are Greece and Rome. Ancient Greece and Roman societies fell over 1,000 years ago, but despite this; their mythology still continues to influence our culture today. Science, modern language, arts, industry, and culture all demonstrate the influence of Greek and Roman mythology in Major industries keep Roman and Greek myths alive through the names of their companies and products. Amazon.com, one of the leading internet websites derived its name from a mythical group of women that were considered wise warriors (Greek Mythology). The god of music is the namesake for the popular New York City Music Hall, the Apollo Theater. Nike, the Greek winged goddess of victory was chosen to represent one of the most famous brands of modern time. Venus the goddess of love and beauty is a well known beauty product for women. Ajax was acquired from the hero of Homer 's famous Iliad (Greek Mythology). Pandora is another mythological name widely used by companies. Pandora Jewelry for instance and more recently Pandora personal radio are just a few examples. Pandora was the first mortal woman in Greek mythology and her name means all gifted. Pandora’s Box is a box that contained all of the evils of the world, and when opened, all of the evils were unleashed. The only thing that remained inside of the box was hope. It is always important to look to the past in order to move towards the future. This was done in the formation of Western Society, and more specifically the formation of American society. The Greek culture served as a frame of reference for many aspects of Western life including government, architecture, math and the arts. Ancient Greek culture served as a very broad base for our society to be built upon.
Mythology was very important to the men and women of ancient Greece. They worshipped the gods and goddesses, wrote poems about them, and based a great deal of art work off of them. The people of Greece looked to the gods and goddesses for help in all aspects of their lives; including health, agriculture, and war. Reading about Greek mythology can inform people about the society of Greece because the Greek gods were created by the people of Greece. Three main goddesses who were worshipped by the Greeks were Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite.

It communicates the culture’s truthful everyday experiences or fabricated details of past events, roles, and traditions such as family, sexuality, art, religion, philosophy, laws and marriage. Ancient Greece and Egypt are two cultures that we’ve studied in this course so far that I will discuss the Creation Myth associated with each culture.

The Greeks had great influence on Roman culture. The Roman gods were the Roman equivalent of Greek gods and even the mythology mirrored the Greeks. Early Roman culture allowed for minimal education, the father educated the sons, when the Romans met the Greeks, education evolved however. Education became about learning things such as literature, language, philosophy, and humanities. The Romans even taught the Greek language to their students since Rome didn’t have it’s own language. Adapting to Greek culture caused Rome to go from a rural society to an urban one. In the later stages of the republic public education became more formal, though it still only included boys. Upper class girls received an education from private tutors in their homes. The focus of Roman culture was the family, according to Suzanne Dixon so long as two citizens wanted to marry and the legal ability to do so, and had the approval of the paterfamilias, or head of the household, then they could marry. The goal of a marriage was to produce children and those children were ultimately the property of the father. Many things such as inheritance, rank, power, and alliances were based upon marriages and it was a cornerstone of Roman culture. Wifes were also treated better in Roman
Over time different beliefs surrounding the mystery of life after death have accumulated in different religions, societies and history. Undeniable by all as an inevitable fate , is the definition has changed over time . Exactly what happens in life after death ? Is there a difference in the qual there is a heaven and a hell ? Or is it simply just an underworld in which all souls come ? Regardless of faith or time period , several authors of all ages have considered these questions in high esteem. But each story is different and belief , whether Dante , Homer or Cervantes, all agree that death is inevitable and with it eternal life.

In the beginning of the book Hamilton writes an introduction to Classical Mythology and how, and why it came about. She starts off by writing that Greek and Roman Mythology is meant to show us how people felt about the human race and about where they came from many years ago. She points out that Mythology describes the Earth when it was young and people cared for the Earth more than today. This is true, because in today?s world not many people are caring about the Earth and its going by us fast.
In conclusion, myths reflect show us the Greeks view on the world, religion, and nature. Their understanding of the world is both similar and different compared to modern society. Myths also reflect the importance of gods in the Greek society and how each god represented something different. In addition, we can see the role of monsters in myths, what they represent and how were they important. Myths also show us the role of women in society and whether they were as important as men or not.
