This semester has taught me a lot of new things, to use as a writer, that I either was not very good at, or did not know before the semester began. One of the things that this semester has taught me was synthesis. This was the first time that I believe I have used synthesis. At least aware that I was using synthesis. I was not very good at it at first. I was confused by it, and I thought that it was stupid to use. However, as the semester went on, the better I got at it and the more I understood how much more effective this was, when developing your argument. I do look forward the rest of my college career, and into my actual career, whether that is on the civilian side or military side. With that in mind I know that I will have to write other papers, for other classes or my future career. I have a set of goals that I plan on pursing. Some of these goals include continuing to improve synthesis. The reason I plan on continuing to improve synthesis, is because I believe that this is a very great tool when it comes comparing and contrasting multiple sources. I believe that this is a great tool to continue to pursue, is because being a science major, I will have to look at other people’s work for experiments I will have to do. This will be very beneficial because it will allow me to look at what has been done, or needs more attention, when trying to come up with hypothesis to experiment on. Another goal I have for the future is to continue to better my grammar. Once I graduate I will become a 2LT in the U.S. Army, and being an officer in the army I will have to write a lot. Whether that is writing a order, a counseling, or a mission brief, I will have to write. Meaning, that my grammar has to be good, in order for not only my soldiers, but my superiors to take me serious. However, the army writing style is much different than other writing, it is direct and to the point. With that in mind, my grammar will have to be on point so there is no confusion between my future soldiers and what I want to get across. As I look back into my high school years, I thought I wrote papers well. But then coming into a college environment, my papers were mediocre. By overlooking at my past papers, I found that they were unorganized, sloppy and had bad use of diction. From now on, I will use the tools I learned in English 1100-40 as a foundation for the future papers I intend on writing in college. Following the criteria of organizing ideas so that they flow, impacting the reader with diction and also by being creative, will help become an ideal writer. Following the criteria of staying motivated in short and long term goals, taking responsibility for actions and finally the ability to study well will help me develop into a supreme student.
a. The Truax points out both good and bad in relations to cutting down the trees. Through communication with Guardbark, the Truax states that cutting down the trees is beneficial for the environment. He explains that the cut trees are being replaced with the new trees that are planted. Furthermore, he says that people are well informed about conservation and that 95 million acres land had been set aside in Natural Preserves. In contrast to the Truax, the Lorax only indicates that cutting down the trees is horrible and gives big damage to the environment. According to the Lorax, the Truffula trees and the animals should be protected since the pristine environment depends on them. When Once-ler cuts all the trees down, the atmosphere gets polluted and the Truffula tree forest’s animals, Swomee-Swans, Brown Bar-ba-loots, and Humming-Fish have no choice other than abandoning their homes. The Lorax is written only from a pessimistic point of view. The only good thing in the story is the ending where the narrator hands the last Truffula tree seed to the child so he can plant and make a positive change
It is said that Western civilization had been primarily male dominated and as a result as diminished the feminine. Women’s roles in society have changed drastically over the past decades. While it took much time, progress for women’s rights has blossomed. Influences in civilization have affected view points of the commonly held mores, expectations, and stereotypes which define gender.
A synthesis is a written discussion that draws on one or more sources. It follows that your ability to write syntheses depends on your ability to infer relationships among sources - essays, articles, fiction, and also nonwritten sources, such as lectures, interviews, observations. This process is nothing new for you, since you infer relationships all the time - say, between something you've read in the newspaper and something you've seen for yourself, or between the teaching styles of your favorite and least favorite instructors. In fact, if you've written research papers, you've already written syntheses. In an academic synthesis, you make explicit the relationships that you have inferred among separate sources.
Television has affected every aspect of life in society, radically changing the way individuals live and interact with the world. However, change is not always for the better, especially the influence of television on political campaigns towards presidency. Since the 1960s, presidential elections in the United States were greatly impacted by television, yet the impact has not been positive. Television allowed the public to have more access to information and gained reassurance to which candidate they chose to vote for. However, the media failed to recognize the importance of elections. Candidates became image based rather than issue based using a “celebrity system” to concern the public with subjects regarding debates (Hart and Trice). Due to “hyperfamiliarity” television turned numerous people away from being interested in debates between candidates (Hart and Trice). Although television had the ability to reach a greater number of people than it did before the Nixon/Kennedy debate, it shortened the attention span of the public, which made the overall process of elections unfair, due to the emphasis on image rather than issue.
Writing has always been challenging for me because of the complexity of multiple rules. In the beginning of the semester I constantly worried about the structure of my writing and its overall material. In high school it was important for me to complete my essays by answering the questions that I was given, but in college, students go more into depth such as focusing in grammar, and well structured ideas that flow along with rich analytical content. After given my first assignment I was pushed to improve my overall work by focusing on organization and thinking more analytically. For example, the weekly readings and writing assignments helped me improve my overall work. Later on, these two techniques, organizing and analyzing work were useful
Writing has been part of my life ever since I learned how to spell my first words. As I use the writing process I had to evolve and learn grammar, orthodoxy, and punctuation. I learned all this in my language which is Spanish. The writing rules are very different in different languages and after having an idea on how to write in English, I always refer back to what I learned in my early years. As I write in English I have faced many challenges to include learning to think in English before I write. I am use to think in Spanish and therefore the words flow as a river with minimum effort on my part. I have tried to think in Spanish, translate my thoughts and then writing in English but has proven to be the most difficult process to follow. As I wrestled with the idea of writing in English and learning to think in English, my writing has become better with each assignment. As I reflect on how my writing has evolved, it is my intention to compare how the different tools and genres of writing had helped me write academically papers and how I expect to continue to better myself for mu future, even after I graduate from college.
This learning goal is to develop a better grasp on my grammar skills and to avoid cliché. Therefore to achieve these goals, I must work on understanding the rules of grammar and also practicing writing on my personal time. To make this goal even more reachable, I have to learn how to understand the rules of grammar, how to apply them, and to stay onto the main point. I also will be contacting the instructor and/or the teaching assistants when in need of help. By putting these goals into place, it allows myself to demonstrate my work abilities and forces myself to adapt to a new and better writing style. Furthermore by trying to accomplish these goals, it allows me to develop my writing skills into a more professional and academic way. Despite the world being full of diverse people with varying accomplishments and skill sets, people oftentimes assume the qualities and traits of an individual based purely on the stereotypes set forth by society. Although these stereotypes are unavoidable, an individual can be liberated, empowered and ultimately overcome these stereotypes by obtaining an advanced education.
Throughout this semester, I was able to learn many writing skill and was able to develop as a writer. When I found out that I was scheduled to be in English Composition I, I was very nervous as I have always felt that writing was one of the skills that I needed to improve on. Although I usually received good grades on my essays, I did not like writing them since it would always take me more than five hours to write a one page essay. If I wanted a good grade in English Composition I, I knew that I was definitely going to have to improve on my grammars. The main skills that we learned in this class were writing a clear thesis statement, paragraph structures, and sensory details. Through this class, I was able to attain more knowledge in these areas and gain confidence in my writing skills. This course has been incredibly fulfilling for me and has been nothing short of an amazing experience. I truly believe all of the things I have learned within this course, such as, writing proper thesis statements, proving my points within the body, discussing topics that critically engage my readers, the use of grammar, and many other essential skills will help me tremendously on my educational path. Although I have learned many skills as to writing a quality essay, I know there are many aspects to writing I can improve on, such as, expanding on my introductions and providing more background within my topics to the readers. I am extremely grateful for the various skills I have learned throughout this course, and I fully intend to utilize them all as I move forward.
Being back in grad school has been an amazing experience because it has put me back in touch with my own process of writing; I am conscious of how I write in comparison to the way in which I expect my students to write. I find myself using the information that I share with them, although at times I feel the pressure that I must earn all A’s on my papers because if I haven’t mastered the process of writing, then I must be a bit of a fraud to be teaching it. But then I have to remember what I have learned about my own process, and what I continue to learn about my own writing process. I keep in mind the epiphany I experienced in graduate school, and I seek to share this information, for current or later use, with my students in the classroom.
When I transitioned into 7th grade, I was very clueless when it came to grammar and sophisticated writing techniques; little did I know how to use commas, semicolons, and transition words in a sentence. Throughout the year, not only did my grammar enhance, but also my sentence structure matured vastly. Reading my papers from the beginning of the year to the end of the year, I knew that my writing has improved.
...d myself having in high school. I still tend to be a little too wordy at times, I misplace commas, and I still forget how to properly cite my research sources every now and them. I think I have become a little more meticulous about looking over my papers, however. I make fewer careless mistakes and take more time writing my papers than I did in high school. My points of view are clearer, and I have not been using commas incorrectly quite as often. I hope to continue to improve in the next few years of college as well. I haven?t received an ?A? on a paper yet, so my goal for the next few years of college is to eventually be able to consistently produce papers worthy of ?As.? I would also like to apply my writing more in school by possibly writing for New Morning in the future. I think Introduction to Literature has had a positive impact overall upon my literary skills.
My greatest strengths in my writing are my organizational skills and my work ethic, and I have certainly improved on my synthesis, evaluation, and summary skills. Organizing an essay is a very natural process for me. I always follow the basic guidelines for the structure of an essay, which state that one must have an introduction, thesis statement, body, conclusion, and a works cited when needed. The American Marriage Essay, Synthesis Essay, and the Compare and Contrast Essay all have an introduction, a thesis statement, a body, a conclusion, and works cited pages. Formatting the essays is an integral aspect of organizational skills. Each new paragraph is indented, the font is twelve-point Times New Roman, the sentences are double spaced, and the headers are correct in The American Marriage Essay, Synthesis Essay, and the Compare and Contrast Essay. Grammar is also very vital to a well-organized paper. I have shown through my writing that I excel at creating grammatically correct essays. For example the thesis from my Compare and Contrast Essay, “While Andrew Sullivan’s “For Gay Marriage” and William J. Bennett’s “Against Gay Marriage” are both about gays joining in matrimony, Bennett takes an anti-gay marriage stance while Sullivan takes a
