I view social work as a helping profession for those who have a big heart. The social work profession offers people opportunities to receive assistance to make changes in someone’s life. A social worker finds and provides resources to a community that may be lacking due to disparities. A social worker assists those who are willing to create changes in their lives to enhance their well-being. I chose social work as a profession because I consider myself as a helper. I truly care about people. I encourage people to overcome their struggles. I sometimes look at myself as a social worker. A social worker has influences on other's lives. My mother and I arrived home that evening and found my step-dad unresponsive. My step-dad had undiagnosed diabetes. The autopsy revealed that a gastrointestinal infection triggered a high blood sugar, which caused him to have a diabetes hyperglycemic crisis. After a few days of the funeral me and my mother; a Licensed Professional Counselor/Mental Health Service Provider went to Kemmons Wilson's Good Grief Counseling and was seen by a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. The social worker engaged my mother and I by assessing us to get clarity on how to intervene in our situation. The social worker helped my mother understand her feelings and found ways for us to express our emotions. I recall the social worker talking about the stages of grief with me to help me get through the process of anger I was feeling for the loss of my step-dad, who had been my step-dad since I was 4 years old. The social worker was willing to help me cope with a loss; I was educated about grief and how it can affect a person's life. I must admit I was grieved and did not know how to deal with it. Two months after my step-dad died my grandmother, Elizabeth died. These experiences greatly motivated me to do more for people while they are here. I understand that it’s people who don’t have anyone and need support and motivation. I would like to educate people with my basic knowledge, help them find resources, or learn techniques to deal with economic hardships, loss, health-related illness, and other related struggles. I want people to be able to provide and navigate resources, so they can get early screening and prevention information. I want to see others living a happy and healthy life.
