I view social work as a helping profession for those who have a big heart. The social work profession offers people opportunities to receive assistance to make changes in someone’s life. A social worker finds and provides resources to a community that may be lacking due to disparities. A social worker assists those who are willing to create changes in their lives to enhance their well-being. I chose social work as a profession because I consider myself as a helper. My mother and I arrived home that evening and found my step-dad unresponsive. My step-dad had undiagnosed diabetes. The autopsy revealed that a gastrointestinal infection triggered a high blood sugar, which caused him to have a diabetes hyperglycemic crisis. After a few days of the funeral me and my mother; a Licensed Professional Counselor/Mental Health Service Provider went to Kemmons Wilson's Good Grief Counseling and was seen by a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. The social worker engaged my mother and I by assessing us to get clarity on how to intervene in our situation. The social worker helped my mother understand her feelings and found ways for us to express our emotions. I recall the social worker talking about the stages of grief with me to help me get through the process of anger I was feeling for the loss of my step-dad, who had been my step-dad since I was 4 years old. The social worker was willing to help me cope with a loss; I was educated about grief and how it can affect a person's life. I must admit I was grieved and did not know how to deal with it. Two months after my step-dad died my grandmother, Elizabeth died. These experiences greatly motivated me to do more for people while they are here. I understand that it’s people who don’t have anyone and need support and motivation. I would like to educate people with my basic knowledge, help them find resources, or learn techniques to deal with economic hardships, loss, health-related illness, and other related struggles. I want people to be able to provide and navigate resources, so they can get early screening and prevention information. I want to see others living a happy and healthy life. Those who choose social work as their profession do so for a variety of reasons. In general, they appear to be motivated by a combination of humanitarian and egalitarian values, and by a desire to understand how society works and how to make it better for everyone. Kris became a social worker because she has a passion and needs to help people. Her passion comes from years of abuse and neglect when she was younger. As a social worker, I have been able to use my skills I have learned in the field and my college education. I have values, beliefs, and ethics that I have used to center my social work career around. Social work as a profession strives to help the welfare of those within the community whether its persons or families through advocacy. Often times clients are those who may be vulnerable and disadvantaged. Social workers aim to help people fulfill basic needs in their everyday lives and assist them by providing beneficial resources and intervention counseling. They do more than just help them in their current situation, it’s about helping them to survive and set attainable goals to live a fuller and better life for themselves, and most time for their families.
There are many reasons why I decided that I wanted to work in the social work profession. When I first enrolled in college, I was a nursing major with the mindset of becoming a neonatal nurse. When that did not go as planned, I decided to become a social work major because I knew I would receive the same reward of helping someone out and providing an individual with a better opportunity by lending him or her a hand. This was my first reason for choosing this career because I saw so many benefits from this profession. My second reason for was due to the fact that I want to help people during their time of need. There were times in my life where I needed guidance and it felt great to have someone there being compassionate and caring towards me.

I chose to pursue a degree in Social Work because I have a deep passion for helping people figure things out and get back on track. I have always tried to help people in the simplest ways without being over intrusive and giving them the respect and dignity they deserve. As a teen I found joy in the slightest things like helping people fill out and submit job applications, filling out medical forms, and explaining to them the process for things such as obtaining Medicaid, food stamps, their food handlers card and even on where and how to apply for your driver’s license. These things may seem trivial but I guarantee that for many people this was a huge help. Working with people is not just something that happens; first you have to want to help people and be patient and understanding with the people who you are helping and that does not happen overnight, second, you must be able to recognize your own limitations and know when to refer someone to qualified professionals.
My reasoning behind deciding to pursue a career in social work stems from my seemingly innate desire to see others succeed in fulfilling their potential. Although it feels somewhat of a cliché, my passion and desire for the field of social work originates from a genuine desire to make a positive difference in people’s lives. The one thing I have always known I'd like to do with my life is to help people. I'm applying for a job shadowing a social worker because essentially making a difference in people's lives is the most important aspect of a future career for me, than any other. I am a person with great confidence. I am very comfortable with assessments and interventions. I feel like I have had enough practice with those skills. I also believe that those are the two skills that I use most when I become license. Every social worker will have to make a assessment of clients when her or she meet them initially.
