When you were a kid, were you ever punished for something you didn’t do? Well the count of Monte Cristo a.k.a Edmond Dantes was wrongfully imprisoned by three men. These men are Ferdinand Mondego; Cousin of his former fiancé Mercedes. Baron Danglars, his former first mate of the Pharaon , a ship for the Morrel shipping company. Finally Gérard Villefort, the Royal prosecutor, who imprisoned Dantes to cover up his own father, who was a Bonapartist. These men each had revenge enacted on them in own special was that in this essay I will determine of the count of Monte Cristo is entirely responsible for.

Villefort is brought down by his illegitimate child Benedetto who accuses him of being his father at a trial in which his wife is the true culprit. Before the trial Villefort instructs her to kill herself or he will denounce her in public. When the case that had just been mentioned is over he returnes home wishing he hadn’t told his wife to kill her self , but it’s too late along with herself he sees that she has also killed her son, then an Abbe appears to Villefort who reveals himself to be Edmond Dantes, Villefort shows Edmond what has happened, he tries to save the son but cannot, this causes Villefort to go insane. While Edmond did not directly cause the deaths of half of the Villefort family, he set the event s that led up to it, this is an example in which Edmond is not directly guilty of the crime

On his wedding day, his betrothal feast was interrupted when the police came barging through the door and arrested Edmond Dantes. Dantes was accused of giving a letter to the usurper while the Pharaon stopped on the Isle of Elba and returning a letter from the usurper to the Bonapartist party in Paris. After his arrest, Edmond was interrogated and questioned by the public prosecutor, Monsieur de Villefort. During the interrogation Villefort promised Edmond freedom, but that was before Monsieur de Villefort read the letter from the usurper addressed to Monsieur Noirtier, Villefort’s father. Edmond Dantes was sent to prison.

Together these three men, Danglars Fernand and Caderousse, make a letter accusing Edmond of the act of treason. Edmond is in fact carrying a letter for the recently deceased captain of the ship to give to a group of Bonapartist in Paris so even though Edmond himself is not a Bonapartist, the task is still enough for him to be tried for treason. The prosecutor, Villefort sees through Danglars, Fernand and caderousse’s plan and decides not to send Edmond to Jail until Edmond reveals the name of the intended recipient who is Villerfort’s father. Not wanting to jeopardize his own career Villerfort sends Edmond to jail for treason. While in jail Edmond begins to think about suicide and falls into a depression. Though he may seem acquitted and amiable, Gerard de Villefort can be dangerous and even murderous. Gerard has done numerous things in his life to corroborate his sinfulness, including the assayed murder of his son, Andrea, by burying him alive when he was a newborn. Gerard is also one of the three main conspirators in the Count's arrest and imprisonment; it is he who is the most measurable of the three. The Count, Edmond Dantes, was an innocent man about to be married, before Gerard’s conception between right and wrong was twisted by the name of his father in a letter. Also, Gerard forces his wife to commit suicide; even though he had had many faults of his own.
In the Arthurian Legend, Sir Lancelot is viewed as the powerful and skilled “White Knight”, on the other hand, he is also considered as the “Sinful Adulterer” for his disobeyment to the knights’ code of chivalry. Despite his innocence, these corrupt sins led to his unsuccessful quest for the Holy Grail. Instead, Galahad, the illegitimate son of Sir Lancelot, is destined to achieve the Holy Grail, his spiritual purity making him a greater warrior than even his prominent father.
Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austrian empire went on a visit to Sarajevo to inspect the armed forces of Bosnia-Herzegovina. While he was on his visit he was attacked more than once. Bombs were thrown at the open car and bounced off and impacted bystanders. 19 year old Serbian Gavrilo Princip caught site of the Austrian soon to be ruler and shot and killed Ferdinand and wife. He then tried to turn the gun on himself before he was attacked by a mob, and arrested for the crime that was committed.
“The Cask of Amontillado” is a powerful tale of revenge. Montresor, the menacing narrator of this tale, initiates revenge upon Fortunato for an insult. Montresor aims to seek vengeance in support of his family motto: “Nemo me impune lacessit.” (“No one assails me with impunity”) Montresor grew fond of revenge on Fortunato and aimed to seize him and end the torture and pain that he has been giving him, but his sensation of guilt and wretched pain has stopped him from achieving his goal. Montresor got terrible revenge on Fortunato, but felt the sensation of guilt that overtook him for his previous actions of revenge and he thought about how there was nothing he could do to take his revenge plot back. This is now an intellect of foreshadowing throughout this short story.
The book “Cask of Amontillado” chronicles what a perfect crime is. Giving an account of the events that transpired 50 years prior, Montresor, an aristocrat from Europe introduces the story by explaining how Fortunato a fellow aristocrat and wine connoisseur insulted him. Though it is not revealed how Fortunato insulted Montresor to make him want to kill him, it is evident that he really angered him. Montresor’s plan is not just to punish Fortunato but to bypass the punishment associated with the crime. Montresor exploits the pride that Fortunato has in his abilities to taste wine to lure him into the catacomb where he manages to send him to the afterlife. Fernand Mondego not only betrays Edmond, but also betrays Haydee, the count’s slave and lover. In the novel, Fernand Mondego acts as the ultimate betrayer because he is envious of Edmond for his happy life and killing Haydée’s father.
Cervantes teaches in his story Don Quixote many things about fantasy and role playing. Alonso Quejana otherwise known as Don Quixote goes through his journey of happiness by making his fantasy into a reality in his own eyes. Don Quixote says to a farmer from his village who wants to call him Senor Quejana “I know who I am and who I may be if I choose” (2381). Here Don Quixote says he knows who is and that he wants to be known as what he chooses. Don Quixote manifests in his fantasy of medieval chivalry knighthood that there is more to the world than meets the eye. Fantasy is important because it creates self- image, affects what we the world as versus what it really is and it improves our experience in many ways.
The Count of Monte Cristo is often viewed as a story of revenge, not love, yet love is an essential theme to the story. The book points out that happiness doesn’t come through revenge, but love. Nearly every character gets a chance at love and joy, though not every circumstance is a happy one. In Ferdinand’s mind, she has broken the edict of his garden, though her body and her land belong to her, and he says that he has “to purge infected blood, such blood as hers” (II.v.26). This is another instance of Ferdinand’s God complex. In relation to judging, Jones states that “it is a double one, consisting of an alternation of extreme tolerance and extreme intolerance. The question of which of the two is shown seems to depend on whether the infringement to be judge is of their own will or merely of that of other people. Justice is unattainable for men. It is simply not in our nature. We don’t even deserve pure justice. The funny thing is we think not only do we deserve justice but we own it. It is believed that it is okay to get your hands dirty when you are getting justice. It is not that way. Justice is beautiful and pure and basically anything, even the slightest but off is simply not justice. That right there is what I am trying to prove in this essay. Justice does not belong to us. We don’t deserve it. There is no way to provide justice without harming innocent people along the way. We get too caught up in our own heads and nothing else matters. We hurt so many people along the way. It’s almost like sinning to become holy. It does not work like that and there is no other way to do it. God is the only one that can provide justice without hurting anyone else. When we try it gets messy and personal. Justice is blind and we are unable to close our eyes. Think about it. Have you ever tried to get justice before? It turns into revenge. People try to give others back what they have felt but you simply can’t. You can’t measure suffering and pain. How do you know how much you received in relation to what you give? The point is you don’t. You never know how much something will impact someone or who is connected to who. Everyone is connected as if we are in some sort of messed up chain. If you break a link the chain is broken. Once the chain is broken you can’t fix it. There is no going back.
