Inspiration Every nursing student retains a motivation that drove him or her into the nursing profession, whether that stands as a personal experience, personality type, or a role model. I chose to enter the nursing profession during high school, when I found myself struggling physically and mentally with my health. In the past four years, I received multiple diagnosis - bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa, depression, and anxiety. The vulnerability and emptiness that I felt in the past four years stands as the motivation for pursing nursing career. Nursing, while it does represent a medical profession, entails healing and caring for a patient in his or her most vulnerable moments. Meaning To me, nursing means providing holistic care for a patient 's absolute health - the body, mind, and spirit. Nursing does not represent merely seeking to provide optimal physical health, but rather assiting an individual in reaching his or her utmost health status. Too often, health care concentrate on a patient 's diagnosis, disregarding his or her culture, family roles, values, beliefs, and motivations. Behind every diagnosis stands an individual with personailized concerns and lifestyle. To represent the body, or physical health, I incorporated three flowers onto my project - lavender, chamomile, and St. Johns Wort. The flowers represent the herbs and medications used to heal the physical body - the type of care commonly associated with a health care setting. Lavender heals restlessness, insomnia, nervousness, and depression. Chamomile treats inflammation, skin diseases, and spasms.
