In the early 17th century, King Charles got into a union with France through marriage in preparation for the war with Spain (Heimert & Delbanco, 1985). Puritans feared that the Roman Catholic Church would be restored in England and coupled with the fact that Charles was blocking reforms in the Church of England, they requested the government to allow them to set up their own colony. The Puritans came to the New World in hopes of establishing their religion as the only accepted faith. In my opinion, they became exactly like those that they fled from in England. Their closed minded views kept them from spreading the word of God and closed themselves off from saving others. Their persecution and intolerance of other religions bound their hands and communities.

The Puritan people migrated to what is now present-day America due to their persecution in Europe. Their religion observed many beliefs that did not agree with other European Christians. These ideals stayed with the Puritans as they settled in America to build their idealistic, utopian society. Even though Puritan society was largely unsuccessful in meeting their expectations, several of their fundamental values are still exemplified by Americans today. These beliefs included the dislike of anything dull, an intense hatred of tyranny, and the idea that America is a shining example for the rest of the world to follow.
The Puritan faith began with what every successful religion needs, highly devout followers. The failure of the religion happened when these devout followers began to lose faith in the Puritan way of life.
