The poem “The Past” by Ha Jin is about a man struggling with how to deal with his past. He looks at all the other people around him and how they’re doing it, and from that he learns what he believes he should do. It’s a poem that made me think about my past and how that affects my present and future, connecting to different aspects of my life and making me really think. Jin starts off the poem stating, “I have supposed my past is a part of myself...and its weight must be borne, or I will become another man.” He is simply stating that your past and your experiences form who you are. Literature shows us the changes of our society from time to time. It also gives us an idea about people, culture, politics, gender traditions, as well as an overall view of previous civilizations. As a part of literature, poetry introduces us to different cultures with different perspectives. Ancient Egypt and ancient China may differ in terms of culture, politics, economic stability, tradition, or even in religious belief. However, in poetry, especially in love lyrics both Egyptian and Chinese poems portray common area of describing women, social attitudes toward love, sexuality and the existence of romance or selfishness in relationships. . If we look at the Egyptian poem “My god, my Lotus” and the Chinese poem “Fishhawk”, we will see both poems have similarities in describing relationships. Also, they have the similarity of imagining the lovers and their expression of love toward each other. However, both poems have some significant differences in terms of representing female sexuality, gender disparity and the display of love.
In the Nag Hammadi Library, there are a multitude of texts that revolve around various themes that are present in religion. The texts that have been chosen for analysis are The Thunder: Perfect Mind, The Thought of Norea, The Sophia of Jesus Christ, and Exegesis of the Soul. A parallel that can be drawn between each of these texts are their references to the feminine presence as one that is deific in nature and the spiritual principles that this presence conveys. Each of these texts share similarities and are significant in different ways in regards to the message being delivered and understood, and how they are interpreted.
The poem “Steps” by Naomi Shihab Nye, is a piece about Arabic immigrants and the effect of their differing levels of assimilation. Nye describes how the immigrants absorb the new culture. In the New World, America, different people can adapt in a myriad of ways. According to the author, some non-natives may assimilate to the American culture more than others, but overall, if someone forgets their original culture and does not teach the next generations, the culture will die.
One of the most distinguished, contemporary poets in America today is Joy Harjo. Born in 1951 in Oklahoma and a member of the Creek (Mvskoke) Nation, her work is deeply influenced by her American Indian roots and upbringing. She has won numerous awards and has published a fair amount of poetry books as well as a memoir, Crazy Brave published in 2012. She is currently a professor of English and American Indian Studies at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. In 2014, Harjo has been named a Guggenheim Fellow, a prestigious award to further the development of scholars and artists. She is planning to use the award funds to complete her second memoir, Songline of Justice.
In the poem, The Boss is Back, written by Victoria Chang originates from her collection of poems in The Boss upon the hardships of office life. The continuous rhythm demonstrates the endless assigned tasks and projects given at the office, where breaks are nonexistent. Suffocation and anxiety are the main feelings of what how the persona feels. Overall, the persona contrasts between the rewards in good grades and how her boss fires the employees regardless of their performance. From the first stanza to the second stanza, the persona transitions between her identity of a mother and an employee implies how her work and personal identities are interconnected.
I’ve realized that I have been writing essays and papers for the majority of my life, and every time, I learn something new. Being able to connect multiple articles or books on a deeper level has made my understandings of the pieces better. However, in my first paper, I only had to connect a common theme within one short story. By doing this, I was able to find multiple examples of how the interaction of characters created a certain type of authority. Making the specific revisions to my paper helped me overall to create a more in depth analysis of the story instead of a summary.

In this paper, I plan to explore and gain some insight on Audre Lorde’s personal background and what motivated her to compose a number of empowering and highly respected literary works such as “Poetry is Not a Luxury”. In “Poetry is Not a Luxury”, Lorde not only gives voice to people especially women who are underrepresented, but also strongly encourages one to step out of their comfort zone and utilize writing or poetry to express and free oneself of repressed emotions. I am greatly interested in broadening my knowledge and understanding of the themes that are most prominent in Lorde’s works such as feminism, sexism and racism. It is my hope that after knowing more about her that I would also be inspired to translate my thoughts and feelings

By many, he’s seen and considered as one of the major writers in modern China. Bei Dao which literally means “Northern Island” is the pen name of this Chinese poet and he’s won copious international awards for his poetry, he’s been nominated severally for the Nobel Prize in literature and he’s an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and letters. He’s also an author of short stories. He’s known through his writing as a critical thinker who creatively constitute a driving force culture and he’s seen as a pervasive, Insuppressible media machine that is incessantly grinding lives into story lines and human voices into carefully gleaming sound bites. Bai’s poetry core concern at this time is a solicitation for the reimposition of personal space and life’s ordinariness against a general indigence of humanity in china for the past ten years. Bai has written many poems which challenge the issue of a corrupt society, abuse of power and bloody landscape of the fascist dictatorship in China.
