Social media although a great tool can become an addiction ultimately affecting our lives and state of mind. That is why we need to limit the amount of time and information we share on social networks. Although the internet is a tool full of good and bad available to everyone, teenagers and young adults are more prone to falling into the traps of the internet. People also abuse social media and overuse it every day because they are concerned with what is happening every hour. Social media is a tool not a necessity and should never be abused or used as a diary because it could result in unwanted consequences that can hurt us in the future. One of the things though is that we don’t only see schemes on social networks it could happen on any site that requires you to share information. Things like online shopping require you to share some of your personal information along with your bank information so if the site doesn’t have a strong security system it can have consequences. There are intelligent hacker1s and scammers that can breach the security system and steal your bank information. Three simple steps such as typing your name, birthdate, and zip code is more than enough for someone to try and steal your identity or use your information to their advantage. Theodore Claypoole in “Privacy and Social Media” said how the United States is trying its best to pass laws and keep up to date with new software in order to help protect people from falling into the realms of cyber criminals (Privacy and Social Media). The attacks can go on forever towards the victim due to the lack of unawareness of others reporting or putting a stop to the bullying. In “Cyberbullying and Cyber threats: Responding to the Challenge of Online and Social Aggression, Threats, and Distress” it says “Teens are reluctant to tell adults for fear of overreaction, restriction from online activities, and possible retaliation from the cyberbully”(Willard, pg. 1). Teens are scared to report incidents like this because they think adults will overreact and not believe that someone can bully you online due to the fact that bullying has always taken place in person and not from behind a screen. Teens are also scared of the outcome that can result from the cyberbully if they report the harassment because they may feel that the bullying will multiply. Another real-life example, “Mary, an obese high school student, was changing in the locker room after gym class. Jessica took a covert picture of her with her cell phone camera. Within seconds, the picture was flying around the cell phones at school (Willard, pg. 1)”. The example shows us how cyberbullying can develop into something big within a matter of seconds. The victim could face bullying at home and school with no time of peace. Not just in social media but victims could receive taunting emails and text messages to their phone
