Throughout this course, we have been introduced to many specialization of jobs within psychology. While exploring, the two areas that I have the most interest in is counseling and social psychology. I have been drawn into these subfields because they both work directly with patients, allowing me to have a hands on experience. Also, I am looking at jobs that work with children in some way and these jobs have many jobs that would allow me to do this. Both fields are closely related, but deal with different types of patients. For counseling psychology, I would want to work with in the area of substance abuse or with abused children that deal with family problems at home. I could then become a child counseling psychologist, earning around $70,700 per year, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. I would be able to study children’s emotional and social processes through their behavior. I would do this by observing and analyzing sessions with them, trying to identify psychological issues. After finding issues, I’d then set up a treatment plan for them. Also with this job, I would be able to work in different environments, such as schools, hospitals, and juvenile detention centers. One job that interest me would be a school counselor. School counselors work in any level of education and aid students academically and socially, in trying to help them succeed in school. I would advise them on scheduling for their classes and help them monitor their grades. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics says the average yearly salary would be around $53,370 per year. Continuing onto a Master’s degree, I would be able to become a social worker and work with people to help them solve everyday problems, diagnose, and find solutions. I would be able to help families and kids improve their relationship with themselves and as well as other people. An average pay would be around $45,500 per year, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. There would be a wide variety of places to work at, such as mental health clinics, schools, hospitals, community development corporations, and private practices.
