Even though he had failed German History, his mother decided he’d be better off as a merchant rather than to continuing his education in high school. He decided to drop out of high school after three years to work in a city close to home. Otto was able to receive a job as a merchant and continued working there after leaving school. He did complete three years as an apprentice after high school as well. Otto worked as a clerk for a part of his life when his brother was an owner of textile company and was able to get Otto a job in Cologne, Germany. His new job was to work as a sales representative at his brother’s company selling a variety of objects such as tea and sugar among other items as well. Otto began to become more and more interested in Lenoir’s engine. During his time while looking into Lenoir’s new engine he later on met a business partner named Eugen Langen. Both Langen and Otto formed a team off of their interests in the engine and began to brainstorm ideas. Otto was able to supply his background knowledge from his great earlier education and Langen was able to support Otto’s idea’s and needs with his money. The newly founded team worked together for about three years working on a new type of engine which definitely branched off of Lenoir’s original design. Displaying His Work In the end of those three years the result was nothing relating to either Otto’s original ideas or Lenoir’s. The two then decided to display their new prototype at the Paris Exhibition of 1867 and it didn’t start off as smoothly as they had liked it to be. The judges on the panel seemed to have taken no interest in Otto and Langen’s design. The two were beginning to lose hope in their new design until one of Langen’s friends on the panel noticed
