My Teaching Philosophy: My Personal Views On Teaching

My personal views on teaching have evolved and developed in a rapid manner over the years, having experienced the situation from both a student and a teachers' perspective. My teaching methodology has grown and expanded in a bid to reach every student whilst keeping in line with their personality and individuality. "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." Confucius As soon as I read this quote I could not help but apply it to my teaching career. I do not believe that our students are empty vessels waiting to be filled with information and knowledge -rather students are partially-filled vessels with a wealth of experience, knowledge and preconceptions. My role as an educator, rather than as a teacher, is to engage the students to tap into this knowledge and challenge them, in order to further build on what they already know. I believe that the educational system should be tailored for each and every student according to their needs in order to bring out their full potential. In today’s classroom, the teacher is no longer viewed as the sole custodian of knowledge. The role of a teacher has evolved into being amongst one of the sources of information allowing students to become active learners, whilst developing and widening their skills. Needless to say, learning has no borders – even for the teacher. One of the strongest beliefs which I cling to with regards to teaching is that, teaching never stops and a teacher must always possess the same eagerness as a student. Through several interactions with other teachers, I always strive for new ideas, techniques, teaching styles and strategies that I might add to my pedagogical knowledge. Following these simple guidelines and objectives, I am able to plan engaging and stimulating lessons that not only motivate the students but are also meaningful to their personal and academic development. Indeed, involving the students in the learning process can only enhance learning and self-development. Infusing the love of learning within the students may encourage them to become lifelong learners, always striving to become better knowledgeable citizens, long after compulsory schooling. I find teaching to be an ongoing, continuous yet challenging process that is rewarding in return. I see no end for improvement. I want to be a teacher who even after years of teaching, still strives to make each lesson better than the previous one, with my mind set on engaging my students to love Physics and Science as much as I do.

    Life is unpredictable and there are an infinite number of paths for one to choose from as they journey through life. One “trail” that seems to be a popular choice to travel is that of an educator. Why is this? What makes the sharing of knowledge so special? Perhaps there is an unparalleled joy in enlightening someone else. Perhaps it is a combination of unlimited elements that drives individuals to be educators. And perhaps there is no one sure answer to these questions. One thing is for sure, our world has seen its share of tremendous and inspiring teachers come and go with the passing years and generations of people.
