4) Why is integrity an important characteristic for a social worker to possess? How will you be certain you act with integrity? Social workers must have a certain level of integrity in their field of practice. This characteristic is important because it helps a person be true to their own beliefs and allows them to set their own boundaries. Integrity can show a social worker what types of clients they are comfortable working with and what types of professions they should not be in. Social workers who have integrity are able to put their energy into cases that they are capable of handling and will have less opportunities of harming the client in any way. I find myself putting too much energy into each individual I meet and sometimes I have their problems affect my day life. To be able to overcome these boundary issues, I will establish clear boundaries with my client. Then after theses boundaries are established, I will make sure that after work I focus on needs that I have instead of my clients. These two strategies will allow me to keep my professional boundaries without offending my clients. I have a great comfort in engaging others and find it easy to communicate with people. When in a group or engaging with someone one-on-one, I do not find it uncomfortable to engage in a conversation or start one. The strengths I possess in my engagement skills are that I am an extrovert, compassionate, and communicate effectively. However, I do need to work on not always starting a conversation and allowing others to talk first. I also need to improve on my listening skills instead of always feeling that I need to make a contribution to the conversation.
