Does phones really hijacked our minds? In “ How Smartphones Hijack Your Mind”, Nicholas Carr claims people's phones are taking over our lives and we can't live without it. In my thesis statement, Nicholas Carr appeals to the readers by using details, studies, and connections to strengthen his argument that humans are being hijacked by their phones. In “ How Smartphones Hijack Your Mind”, Nicholas Carr uses details to make his claim. In the article he says, “the mere presence of mobile devices, the researchers reported in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, “ inhibited the development of interpersonal closeness and trust” and diminished “the extent to which individuals felt empathy and understanding from their partners.” Nicholas …show more content…

“ The researchers recruited 520 undergraduate at UCSD and gave them to standard tests intellectual acuity. One test gauged “ a available work-memory capacity,” a measure of how fully in a person's mind can focus on particular task. The second assessed “ fluid intelligence,” A person’s ability to interpret and solve an unfamiliar problem…And both tests, The subject who’s phone is right and you pose the worst scores, while those who left their phone in a different room did the best.” He uses the study to show videos that people can’t focus without their phones. They get distracted if the phone is anywhere near them or around them. There’s also another study explaining, “ showed that when people hear their phone rang but are unable to answer it, their blood pressure spikes, the pulse quickens, and their problem-solving skills decline.” This suggest that people get anxious to see what’s on their phone. Nicholas Carr says, “ phones beep or buzz while they’re in the middle of a challenging task, the focus waivers and their work gets sloppy or whether they check the phone or not.” This quote relates to the thesis because it explains how people get distracted because they’re focused on the phones. People lose focus when they get a text because they anxious to see who the person is or what the person
