Why living in Kansas is unique. Living in Kansas is unique because there are many historical things that happened here that we don’t really notice. Home on the Range Cabin In 1871, DR. Brewster M. Higley lived in his log cabin. Higley wrote a poem, its title was “My Western Home” he saved the poem as nothing special. (Strokes, 2011) After this, his neighbor found the poem and convinced Higley to publish it in the paper. The poem was then published in a December issue of Smith County Pioneer with a title of “Oh, Give Me a Home Where the Buffalo Roam.” (Strokes, 2011) How it became a song Dan Kelley helped Higley set the poem to music. Some people never get satisfied with what they have. In the stories, "Amir", and, "Gold Mountain Poems", The life lesson is to be happy for what you have. In both stories the main characters are immigrants coming to America. In the story, Amir just moved here from India and is upset with the people. In the poem the speaker is taken to an immigrant island instead of being released to go live in America. In both stories they are grateful for what they have.
The death camp was a terrible place where people where killed. Hitler is who created the death camp for Jews. The death camp was used for extermination on Jews. This occurred on 1939 – 1945. The death camps were in the country of Europe. Hitler did all this because he didn’t like Jews and the religions. The book Night is a autobiography written by Elie Wiesel. The poem called First they came for the communist written by Martin Neimoller is a autobiography.

At one point in the book Mickey and his friends play a paintball game in school and every weekend I go with all my friends and play paintball. We all have a lot of fun and use different paint balls for our favorite colors so we know who shot each other. In the book Mickey says that “We then played some dumb paintball game where two people got hurt”. You must wear your gear at all times during a paintball game. Or else something like this might happen.

Turner and Buffalo Bill both showed American westering as a tale of conquest, of either nature or Indians, but triumph in the face of difficult odds nonetheless. They also used similar iconography that was already popular in American culture at the time to draw their audiences in. Covered wagons and log cabins were set pieces in Buffalo Bill’s dramatizations, familiar pieces of American history that resonated with audiences who longed to see the simpler side of life actually come to life. In Turner’s writings, those same covered wagons and log cabins were nostalgic and romantic depictions of the lives westward pioneers were building in the free lands. Through these icons, Turner and Buffalo Bill rooted the value of exploration of new lands and hard work even further into American cultural ideals that they were before. The Frontier was, according to them, the essential American experience and many people agreed. But this American experience could not last forever and both men mourned the closing of the Frontier as a serious loss to American culture and development. For the West, so celebrated for its freedom and wildness, to be contained by the rigid lines of city life was a blow to the development of American culture in their minds. Structured primarily by their own ideas of masculinity, the rougher terrains and hardships of settling land were preferred and the containment and refinement were in a ways emasculating.
Over the course of the semester, we read several hybrid genre books and some with hybrid themes. For the topic of my personal narrative, I settled on a subject near to my heart, the prospect of summer. To establish my theme of a blissful summer surrounded by nature, I implemented several elements from parts I and II of Jean Toomer’s Cane, Maggie Nelson’s Bluets, and Anne Carson’s Autobiography of Red.

Gratitude is the quality of being thankful, which is shown in both the Thanksgiving poem and Another Case of Ingratitude. The Thanksgiving poem expresses pure gratitude, whereas in Another Case of Ingratitude the homeless man shows gratitude in a way that is not common. In Another Case of Ingratitude, the homeless man displays basic gratitude for his food with a thankful expression on his face. He shows minimal gratitude with only a facial expression. He is clearly limited in his ability to be thankful. On the other hand, in the poem, the author states all the things in life that everyone should be grateful for, like friends, love, and good health. The author conveys abundant joy through his words.
