Death is a difficult subject for many people. The topic alone can cause a lot of anxiety because of all the things we don’t know. Most of us fear death for many reasons. Whether it’s your final day, or a final moment with a loved one, it’s a painfully scary process because of its uncertainty. When we hear the word death, we define it as the end of life itself. Most people fear death because it’s either going to be painful, unknown, or even both. I believe most of us fear death because it’s a final moment of being part of loving relationship or family, it makes you feel that there’s a ticking clock counting down your existence and that all you wished for or hoped may have not been achieved. I consider death an adventure because as human, we …show more content…

We simply have to learn how to die and learn to live well despite the fear. In Medical training is not very helpful for understanding the personal, as opposed to the medical, nature of dying.” (Ira, 35) I found Dr.Ira’s words to be wise and realistic. I know fear will always be around, but ultimately it is your beliefs that can help you endure a peaceful state of mind or a painful mind full of fear. If we have a purpose for life than either of those things won’t have any burden on. Sometimes I’m scared of death, but after hearing that from Dr.Ira I realized that fearing death holds me back because I have other things to fear such a busy work life or not living a good life, and providing for my family. After all, you may be forgotten when you die, but the true fear is mostly what you leave behind before your
Fear of the unknown, and fear of what is to come in our lives, has generations of people wondering what will our lives be like tomorrow or the next day. Death is always there and we cannot escape it. Death is a scary thing. Our own mortality or the mortality of our loved ones scares us to the point that we sometimes cannot control how we are dealing with such a thing as the thought of death. Why do we fear such a thing as death? We don’t know what happens after we don’t how it feels. The fear of death is different for most but it is most certain to come and we cannot hide from it. For death is just around the corner and maybe it’s will come tomorrow or the next day! We fear not death, but the unknown that comes from death, that is the
Death is part of the circle of life and it's the end of your time on earth; the end of your time with your family and loved ones. Nobody wants to die, leaving their family and missing the good times your loved ones will have once you pass on. In the Mercury Reader, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross “On the Fear of Death” and Joan Didion “Afterlife” from The Year of Magical Thinking” both share common theses on death and grieving. Didion and Kübler-Ross both explain grieving and dealing with death. Steve Jobs commencement speech for Stanford’s graduation ceremony and through personal experience jumps further into death and how I feel about it. Your time is on earth is limited one day you will die and there are many ways of grieving at the death of a loved one. I believe that the fear of death and the death of a loved one will hold you back from living your own life and the fear of your own death is selfish.
Death is not a concept that is well grasped or understood but we all know the cycle of life, we live and we die. We do not know how and we do not know when, our fate is laid out for us, we just learn to accept it because it is just how it goes. Some are lucky enough to live a healthy life with few to none complications and some find themselves fighting for their lives because of a terminating illness or severely injured from any type of accident. In an act of pain, torture, agony and knowing there is no hope for survival why can it not be you that has the upper hand in deciding when it is time to say goodbye.
When people ponder death they wonder about the unknown with trepidation. As a young man, William Cullen Bryant wrote the "Thanatopsis." His thoughts progress from the fear of death to the acceptance of the event. People should not fear death because everyone dies and becomes a part of nature.
The unknown is something human can’t wrap their heads around so like mystery humans try to figure it out, to discover it so that mankind may not be fearful of death. In doctor Macknees’ paper “Is there Life after Birth?” he examines the fears of death and how it’s related to humans fear of living. The three topics being fear of what happens after death, fears related to the process of dying, and fears of the loss of life. Each topic has 3 subtopics that go deeper into the thoughts that many may have as death approaches them or fears for the future. The three that connected the most to me would be under the topic of fears related to loss of life, subtopics fear of mastery, fear of incompleteness or failure, and fear of separation. In my last paragraph about death I will go deeper into my thoughts behind these and their relation to my fears of life as described by Charles Macknee. Death as described by the class of Psychology and spirituality is the end of all that is familiar and entering into something beyond our control but also beyond what our minds can comprehend. Death is something I think many of us don’t want to confront, whetherits our own or it’s a loved ones. I know that it is something I never like talking about or thinking
The objective of this paper is to explore the relation between death anxiety and individual’s self-esteem. “Death Anxiety” and “Self-Esteem” will be the main variables of the research. Death anxiety can be defined as the realization of inescapability of death, which leads many people to experiencing deep sense of terror (Harmon-Jones et al., 1997). Humans are unique due to their ability to learn and adapt to live with an understanding of their mortality. It is a task for the cultural systems to symbolize death and provide a meaning for its occurrence, furthermore to interpret its superiority over human life (Becker, 1973). Death anxiety is a multidimensional concept, which revolves around fear and anxiety related to the reality of dying and expecting it to happen. This fear might be based on various emotional, cognitive and motivational components that depend on the development stage and sociocultural life events (Letho, 2009). Second concept in this research - “Self-Esteem” is defined as confidence and satisfaction in oneself, self-respect” (Merriam-Webster). In this research self-esteem will be viewed from two sides: Intrinsic and Extrinsic, since individual’s self-esteem consistency depends on both – internal and external factors as it is specified in Contingencies of Self–Worth Scale. In this case, measurements were conveyed through an analysis of internal and external sources of self-esteem, which are: approval of others, physical appearance, dominating over others in competition, academic competence, family love and support, being a virtuous or moral person, and God’s love (Crocker et al., 2003).
...e for many in the modern Western world. Without getting in to the various medical definitions of death that exist, death can simply be defined as the absence of life. This is where the true fear stems from for most people, the idea that their existence will be known to this world. The uncertainty about what happens after death also plays a large role for many people as there is obviously no way to prove what happens after someone passes. It is clear that those who have this fear of death will have a hard time overcoming it, same as Jack. The point is not to get hung up on how to best push the fear out of your mind, but to instead find an alternative. That alternative is not clearly defined just as nothing is clearly defined in the novel, however it does give one the opportunity to see what happens when you let death control your thoughts instead of focusing on life.
Death is always an interesting topic for discussion. Individuals will respond differently to it emotionally and physically. Some will see it as a nuisance and attempt to remain as busy as they can to not think of it but once death catches up to us we hope and pray that there is an afterlife where we can continue living. Others will do anything in their power to fight against it and make sure that they live their life to the fullest. These individuals are determined to leave some trace of them behind before it is too late. There are a few individuals who find the beauty in death. As if death is all around us and we simply need to take the time to look at it. In any case death is something we will encounter and in Dickinson’s “Because I Could Not Stop for Death”, Thomas’s, “Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night”, and Seuss’s “Still-Life with Turkey” we are shown these different viewpoints in very different and unique ways.
What is Fear? Fear is a reaction in the brain triggered by a stressful stimulus and often triggers physical reactions. This the biological definition of fear, fear however strikes deep within ones psyche; it alters ones life and takes it of controlling all aspects of it. In this case, the fear of death completely takes over ones life and determines what he or she does in their life. For example, many people who fear death are often scared too do adventurous activities or do anything where they can get hurt, they avoid many areas and avoid people because they fear for there lives. This situation is not healthy and many people have dull, boring and unpr...
Death is perceived as a bad thing to most people in the world, though it is natural and inevitable. Every person who has ever lived has also died and so will everyone who ever lives. So why are people so afraid of it? Is it because death entails an endless blackness and lack of anything or anyone? Or as others believe, is it because death is a permanent end to life? It must be that people fear death because it deprives us of the good things life brings such as feeling, emotion, and perception among other things. Thomas Nagel raised three problems with this irrational fear of death:
Humans are afraid of dying. Death reminds us of our limitations and lack of control. We try to connect with something more enduring than our physical bodies.
What is death? What makes death such an avoided subject? According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, death is defined as: the permanent cessation of vital functions; the end of life. So maybe we fear death and death’s process because the thought of life ending is unbearable or because we know little about the dying process and naturally, as humans, we fear the unknown. These all may be true and in most cases probably are. But if one was to take a look at death and the process and consider the true meaning of that very moment in one’s life, maybe we would view it differently and maybe, just maybe, see life itself in a whole new way?! Marie de Hennezel, in her book Intimate Death defines death as . . . “our life’s culmination, it’s crowning moment and what gives it both sense and worth” (xi). She sheds light on the positive side of death, the part no one thinks about or acknowledges. And she shows us that death can in fact make us see how amazing life can be. In his book, The Body Silent, Robert Murphy shares with us the changes in life and actions of society when faced with the process of death.
...ording to Heidegger, become fearful of the prospect of death. He argues the correct response to death in one’s life is a form of ‘brave anxiety’ (Heidegger, pge 310, 1978). There is a distinction between this anxiety and outright fear towards death, where fear is attached to some object, person or idea (in this case the prospect of death). Anxiety involves what Heidegger describes as an ‘impassioned freedom towards death’ (Heidegger, pge 310, 1978) due to the fact anxiety is concerned with human freedom or lack thereof regarding choices we cannot make. As pointed out earlier death is out of our control and therefore should be regarded with anxiety rather than outright fear of something we cannot control. Heidegger seeks to explain death in these ways because he wishes to explore how the anxiety of death is related to being, not due to some kind of morbid curiosity.
Death is a topic everyone will witness countless times during his or her lifetime. Death of loved ones’, animals, or strangers are just few examples of experiences that can mold one’s impression of death. Since I am rather young, I have only truly experienced death on few occasions. One of which was the death of my grandfather. He was in a lot of pain and was bedridden for months. For him, death was almost inevitable and was an answer to the pain he was feeling. I’m not 100% definite how I personally perceive death, but because of my grandfather, I always think of death as being imperative, yet inevitable. I have a great fear for death, because I know how much pain it causes loved ones.
No one wants to think about dying or death in general. However it is important to face reality and plan for the inevitable future.
