Totalitarianism: The Effect Media has on an Individual George Orwell’s 1984 is a novel that explores the effects of totalitarianism. Totalitarianism is one political power ruling over all aspects of daily life. Orwell’s totalitarian government uses Big Brother, the Thought Police, the telescreen and Two-Minutes of Hate to show the control over the people of Oceania and their lack of independence. In order to live their lives peacefully, the citizens of Oceania must obey Big Brother, the media figure that they are to worship and praise as one of their goals in life. "Big Brother is watching you" (5) is plastered all over the posters throughout the town that cause the citizens to consciously recognize that Big Brother controls both their public and private lives. This leaves the citizens feeling that they cannot be unique because if they do not obey the rules of Big Brother they will eventually be eliminated. Goldstein is shown to be the head of the group called the Brotherhood, which is a group of people that come together that are against Big Brother. When Big Brother is shown in the Two-Minutes of Hate, all of the hate is directed towards Goldstein. (Big Brother. Fofweb.com) During that time Big Brother is turning the citizens against Goldstein and with the control that he has on them, he seems to be keeping the society together in a robotic way, making them all dislike Goldstein. The citizens of Oceania have no other knowledge of anything else and are afraid to even think any other way that is not instructed by Big Brother. The Thought Police has an effect on how Winston and the rest of the citizens feel as individuals. George Orwell's 1984 was a book with a lot of deeper meanings and messages about the political systems of the world and about society. 1984 is about a world where privacy does not exist and the ruler of the so called "free world" is called Ingsoc. Ingsoc has a political party called big brother which watches over everything in the world through manned helicopters flying over the city of Oceania at all times, Tele-screens in every house business area and room blurting out propaganda and cameras with microphones listening and watching every conceivable object and person in Oceania.
Winston is confronted with struggle throughout the entirety of George Orwell`s dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. Living within a totalitarian regime subsequently causes Winston to seek approaches for dealing with such abundant oppression; he finds liberation through self-awareness, understanding and ultimately rebellion. First, Winston realizes that “if you want to keep a secret you must also hide it from yourself”, alluding to the notion of thoughtcrime (162). Winston’s attempt to join a rebellious organization exhibits his evident desire to release his suppressed emotions. Winston devises a very methodical approach to deal with the problematic society he resides in.

In the novel, 1984 by George Orwell, Winston Smith, the main character, is in world full of technology. There is a telescreen that watches and hear everything you do. Big Brother posters are everywhere on the street and in building .The police are involved in everything too. Everything you do has to be Big Brothers way, including how you speak. The Party controls what you believe, if someone does something wrong, that person is vaporized or tortured in the Ministry of love, a place with no windows and no darkness. And if everyone knows that that person has been vaporized and the Party says they haven’t been vaporized, you have to believe that they didn’t and if you say otherwise, then you get vaporized as well. The Ministry of Truth writes the newspapers and says what the Party says. The Ministry of Peace focuses on war with Eastasia and Eurasia, they say that they are in war and bomb their own cities and tell the people that they are in war. The Ministry of Plenty looks after economic affairs in Oceania. Everything in Oceania is being watched or listened by Big Brother.
To accomplish this, Orwell utilizes the theme of individuality versus tyranny, foreshadowing, and irony, in order to fully extract all possible motives behind Winston’s actions.Many countries, such as the United States, are founded on principles of individuality reigning over tyranny, more specifically, the freedom of choice. Winston however, from the commencement of the novel, showed that he was not willing to conform to such a tyrannical society. From his writing “DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER” in his diary as the novel opened, to his relationship with Julia, which was considered sexcrime in Oceania, Winston proved his thoughts were antiparallel to those of the Inner Party.

George Orwell envisioned a nightmarish utopia that could have very easily become a possibility in 1949 ? the year the novel was written. He managed to create such a realistic view of humanity?s future, that this story has been deemed timeless. There will always be the threat of totalitarianism, and at some moments civilization is only a step away from it. Orwell hated the thought of it, and 1984 shows that. The psychological manipulation and physical control are explored through Winston's journey, and with Winston's resistance and ultimate downfall, the reader is able to fully appreciate O'Briens reasoning, "Power is not a means, it is an end."
George Orwell’s key objective throughout his novel, 1984, was to convey to his readers the imminent threat of the severe danger that totalitarianism could mean for the world. Orwell takes great measures to display the horrifying effects that come along with complete and dominant control that actually comes along with totalitarian government. In Orwell’s novel, personal liberties and individual freedoms that are protected and granted to many Americans today, are taken away and ripped from the citizen’s lives. The government takes away freedom and rights from the people so that the ruling class (which makes up the government), while reign with complete supremacy and possess all power.
Ultimately, common ideas found in the novel 1984, totalitarianism, surveillance, and lack of privacy are also ubiquitous in modern society and government. Big Brother and modern day government have been able to control its citizens through surveillance equipment, and fear all for a little more power. There is much to learn from such an undesirable form of society much like the one of Oceania in 1984. Examining Big Brother government closely, alarming connections can be made to real-world government actions in the United States and the cruel world within Orwell's book.
