Nursing profession is constantly evolving and how we are making an impact on the future with the transformation of education, practice and leadership. The nursing workforce is not stagnant nor ever was but the changes in the last decade or so has seen dramatic transformations in how society views nurses as a profession. We have come a long way since Florence Nightingale opened the first nursing school in London in 1860. However, our process of learning is far from over nor is it perfected. Since the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) was passed in congress in 2010, our demand for nurses has increased since the availability of healthcare for everyone has begun. Impact of Nursing Education The Institute of Medicine (IOM) had issued a report in 2010 detailing the impact of nursing transforming in three areas; Practice, Education and Leadership. This report has led to reforms in the health profession and advocating for more nursing staff in clinics and hospitals. A 2010 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report warned that the “nursing profession must change or it would not be able to meet the growing demands that are emerging as a result of health reform, new technologies and an aging population” (Studies assess impact of IOM report on nursing reforms,” n.d.). Society has increased the demands for more education for nurses, how we practice nursing and how we lead as nurses. Society has to increase education availability for nurses, lower college fees and provide more loans and grants for students.
