Introduction Social Work is a helping profession finding way to help address problems and challenges for individuals from all walks of life. To work as a Social Worker you have to be able to control feelings and emotions. Emotional Intelligence is important because it’s important to be able to identify the source of your stress and recognize the role you play in creating or maintaining stress or any kind of negative emotion (Morrison, 2007). As a Social Work you work directly with individuals who are often in distress or under stress, and Social Workers as well become affected by the distress of others.

I don’t always think I work well always under pressure because I tend to easily make mistakes and experience anxiety. But on the flip side my motivation to get the job done is elevated. Either way the job gets done just maybe not in the most comfortable pace.

Someone who has compassion and recognizes others emotions and are able to connect with them on an emotional level describes empathy. An Emotional response has an impact one’s thinking ( Wang, Wilhite,Wyatt, Young, & Bloemker, 2012). I try to put aside my own viewpoint and try to see things from another’s person point of view. When I’m frustrated or upset I try to figure out why I’m experiencing these feelings, examine my own attitude and body language and ask questions.

It is possible for people to become more emotional competent. I understand why it’s important to learn or be trained on the principles for developing emotional competence. Understanding what pushes people to edge and developing positive and healthy working relationships are important. Working in the helping profession it’s important that you’re able to interact and communicate effectively. Emotional intelligence is defined as the ability to identify, assess, and control the emotions of oneself or of groups. Researchers such as Peter Salvoey and John D. Mayer define it as “the subset of intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them, and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and actions” (Feeley& Driscoll CPA, 2014). In this paper, I will identify the role emotional intelligence plays in the critical thinking skills used by the forensic accountant during various stages of the investigative services of the engagement.
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. Compassion and empathy inspire change in a society whether it be changing individual’s usual way of thinking, uniting, or accepting those who are different. Individuals can use their compassion for something to cause a change in someone else’s thought of that thing. Several people have used empathy to bring others feelings together. People can also use empathy to show others to have acceptance towards ones who may not be like themselves.
To be able to understand how empathy works between a certain group of people, it is necessary to know what empathy means. I found an interesting definition of empathy, as a crucial component of the helping relationship, a need to understand people ' distress, and to provide supportive interpersonal communication. Social work can be emotionally demanding and it is important that anyone interested in becoming a social worker understands that. Dealing with other people’s pain and suffering is difficult. Social workers need to be resilient and know how to get support themselves and use that support effectively.
Empathy is used to create change in the world by reaching out to the emotions of people and attending to them. It is used to help others learn and decide on matters that would not be reasonable without feelings attached to them. Applying these aspects of emotional intelligence has a significant enhancing effect on every aspect of life. It allows one to be self aware, improving the ability to process information about oneself accurately (Goleman, 2008). Emotional intelligence also affects management of mood in that it enhances one’s ability to manage emotions, create moods of positivity, and defuse bad moods. Emotional intelligence also comes in handy with regards to motivation of self. It increases an individual’s ability to overcome frustration, the ability to be persistent, ability to engage in tasks that are boring, but necessary, and to be involved in and cut out productive and non-productive actions respectively.
Morrison (2007) introduces Emotional Intelligence (EI) as “Being able to motivate one-self and persist in the face of frustration; to control impulse and delay gratification; to regulate one’s mouth and keep distress from swamping the ability to think; to empathize and to hope (as stated in Goleman, 1996). The dictionary definition of Empathy is the psychological identification with or vicarious experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and attitudes of others. Simply put, empathy is the ability to step into someone else’s shoes, be aware of their feelings and understand their needs. In the workplace, empathy can show a deep respect for co-workers and show that you care, as opposed to just going by rules and regulations. An empathic leadership style can make everyone feel like a team and increase productivity, morale and loyalty. Empathy is a powerful tool in the leadership belt of a well-liked and respected executive (Pressley, 2012).
Empathy is the ability to imagine yourself in someone else’s position and to intuit what that person is feeling (Pink, 2006). Rather than simply sympathizing, empathy enables us to put ourselves into the shoes of another and actually feel what they are feeling. This vicarious sense allows us to better understand people and their experiences. Understanding others and their experiences is vital in education. Whether dealing with different races, religions, sexes, etc., empathy provides us with an avenue to widespread understanding of others that even language cannot.
Now for the professional stuff, how much does Emotional Intelligence have on your professional success? Lets just say a lot, emotional intelligence is the strongest predictor of performance. Your emotional intelligence impacts most everything you say or do each day, and it can be developed. The pathway for your emotional intelligence starts in the brain, at the spinal cord. Your primary senses enter here and must travel to the front of your brain before you can think about your experiences. They first however travel through the limbic system, the place where emotions are generated. So we have an emotional reaction to events before the rational brain is able to engage.
